Spy. for Herbert advertised,

As the post arrives so seldom and precarious
during the winter, the editor will receive
every communication with thanks.15

The supply of paper must have caused trouble, also,
for Herbert inserted a notice that

The printer having been detained in getting a
supply of paper until the week was rather far
advanced, it is under the necessity this once
of requesting the public indulgence.16

Spring came, and with it better roads and the
mails. The presswork on the paper was evidently too
much for Herbert to handle himself, for he advertised
that "A journeyman printer will find employ by apply-
ing speedily at this office."17

On the first anniversary of the paper, the editcr,
in an address "To the public," stated that

its kind patrons are very respectfully informed
that it will be prosecuted with every improve-
ment that gratitude, friendship and abilities
can invent;

but he deemed it necessary "to quote the second article

of the original conditions": the price of fifteen
shillings per year, and the terms for paying it. It
sounded encouraging for the future of the paper that

The editor with thanks acknowledges the receipt
of the first payment from nearly all his sub-
scribers, and entertains the most lively grati-
