B. and Benjamin Franklin were undoubtedly trained in
practical printing. The former assisted his father in

the publication of Bartgis's Republican Gazette during

1815 and 1816, and possibly longer... The younger son,
Benjamin Franklin Bartgis, established his own English
and German printing office five and a half miles from
Frederick (possibly Pleasant Dale) in 1813, where he
also carried on the paper making business.20 In his
History of Frederick County, T.J.C. Williams states
that Benjamin Franklin Bartgis spent his whole life

farming near Frederick,21 so the younger Bartgis1
career as a printer and paper maker was probably of
rather short duration.

John Winter, School Teacher and Publisher of the
Rights of Man. - John Winter, from Southern Maryland,22
began publication in Frederick of the Maryland Gazette
and Frederi ck Weekly Advertis er about February 20,
1790 and continued it at least through October 4,
1791.2S After that date, the next trace of Winter is
found in a notice inserted in Bartgis's Maryland
Gazette of August 15, 1793:

19 Brigjiam, C.S. op. cit. p. 183.

20 Bartgis's Republican gazette. February 20, 1813.

21 Williams, T.J.G. History of Frederick county,
Maryland, v. 2, p. 858.

22 Scharf, J.t. History of Western Maryland.

v. 1, p. 529.
23 Brlgham, C.S. op. cit. p. 188.
