sible to arrive at a conclusive date. Apparently,
only one copy of the Lehre is in existence, at the
Maryland Historical Society. Proposals for publish-
ing the prose and poetical works of George Trisler
of Frederick-Town were issued by Bartgis in 1799.
The work was to be published by subscription, in two
volumes, concluding with a poem on Harper's Ferry,^
It was this Trisler who established a newspaper in
Winchester, Virginia in 1799, the Winchester Triumph
of Liberty,11 and who was characterized by Alexander
Martin of the Baltimore American as "a gentleman of
very handsome abilities".12 Whether Trislerfs liter-
ary works were ever published in Frederick is an un-
solved problem; but at least there was in the poet's
town a printer interested in giving local talent its
due recognition.
Bartgis's Maryland Gazette became Bartgis's
Federal Gazette probably sometime during 1794; Evans
states that the title may have been changed at the
beginning of the third volume, in May.13 The newspaper
retained the latter title until sometime in 1800,
when it became Bartgis's Republican Gazette. Although
