ing as executor to an estate or that he purposed at-
tending the court of another county,5 indicate that
he may have been a practicing lawyer besides.

Sarcuel Green was Frederick Green's partner in
the publication of the weekly newspaper, the Maryland
Gazette, which was begun in 1745 and which continued,
with only one serious interruption, until 1839.6 In
addition to his activities as printer and editor of
the newspaper, Samuel Green was postmaster of Annapolis
from April 26, 1799 until his death on January 6, 1811..7

Probably the largest task which the Green press
undertook in the last decade of the eighteenth century
was the printing of the Laws of Maryland compiled
by William Kilty.8 There had been no comprehensive
edition of the laws since Alexander C. HansonTs Laws
of Maryland was published by the Green press in
1787;9 the need for a more up-to-date work was such
that the House of Delegates of the General Assembly
resolved on December 20, 1798,
