James Angell^ Partner and Later Owner of the Maryland Journal
The Maryland Journal appeared with James Angell's name as printer
until November 1, 1793, when Paul James Sullivan went into partner-
ship with him and the paper was published tri-weekly on Monday,
Wednesday and Friday. Sullivan withdrew on June n, 1794 and Angell
continued to publish the paper alone. The printing office was moved to
James Sterrett's Old Brew House in Water Street, between Gay and
Commerce Streets on October 17. On October 31, 1794 he sold out his
ownership to Francis Brumfield. The subscription list at that time
contained about two thousand names.8
Angell married Mary Barney, an elder sister of Commodore Joshua
Barney, on December 25, 1788 at the First Presbyterian Church in
Baltimore.9 Nothing is known of his career after he disposed of the
newspaper. According to family tradition he died in Baltimore of yel-
low fever.10 The Telegraphe and Daily Advertiser printed a notice of his
death on September 26, 1797: "Died yesterday, after a short illness,
Mr. James Angel, formerly a Printer, of this city ..."

10 See A. F. Angell, Genealogy of the Descendants of Thomas Angell. Pages 45, 47 and 92. Very little in this book can be
safely relied upon; it contains many errors and inconsistencies. But it is of some value since the author probably had avail-
able family legends which have since been forgotten.
