had employed Goddard from 1765 until 1766 in the publication of the
New York Gazette and Weekly Post-Boy and he doubtless followed his
career in Philadelphia and Baltimore with interest. Goddard's activi-
ties in organizing the postal system in New York brought him in con-
tact with Holt and Lamb and it may have been then that Oswald first

met him. On January 2, 1778, Oswald sent his best regards to Goddard
through Lamb21 and on October 15 of the same year he mentioned his
intention of visiting Baltimore.
"Mr. Goddard is at Baltimore, which Place I have some thoughts of visiting before I return to
my Family. 1 regret his not being here as I promised myself much Satisfaction in his conver-
sation......." 22
The terms of the partnership between these "hotspurs of typography"
were arranged and on June 8, 1779, an announcement of their plans for
a printing, bookselling and stationery business appeared in the Mary-
land Journal. They were unable to carry out their plans of a printing
