James Young advertised in the Maryland Gasette on October 31,1786 that he proposed to publish a directory on the first
day of January, 1787. Subscriptions at 3/9 were taken by James Hayes. The directory was probably not published since
no record of it has survived. The earliest Baltimore directory known was published in 1796.

He arrived in Baltimore from Germany on August 31,1784, and bought land on the Potomac not far from the Monacasy
where he established a glass factory which employed 135 workers. He wanted a government subsidy for his industry.

The college was to be formally opened December 8 to 10,1787 with a president and three teachers on the faculty. It was
expected to be at least £1100 in debt when it opened. For an excellent account of the founding and early history of this
institution see the article by Dr. George W. Archer of the Harford Historical Society which was printed in the Bel Air Tinus
on February 24,1893 and reprinted in 1934 in pamphlet form by the Bel Air Times Company.
