JOSEPH KENT, ESQUIRE, GOVERNOR,

1826.

authorised, to record a deed of manumission from George Cal-
vert, of said county, to negro Charlotte, and others, therein
specified, and that the said deed be of the same force and .effect
as if recorded agreeably to the act thereby provided; Provided
that nothing in this act contained shall affect bona fide pur-
chasers heretofore made.

CHAP. CCIX.
An Act to make valid and effectual the Letter of Attorney therein men-
tioned.

Passed Mar. 10, 1827

WHEREAS it is represented to this general assembly, by the
petition of Joseph King junior, of the city of Baltimore, that
fey a letter of attorney executed in Great Britain by the Reve-
rend Arthur Jacques, Letitia Jacques, and Elizabeth Cowtan, he
the said King was authorised and empowered to claim and re-
cover certain legacies bequeathed to the said Arthur Letitia
sad Elizabeth, by Lancelot Jacques, formerly of Washington
county, in this state, deceased, but that the same was not ac-
knowledged in the manner prescribed by law for the acknow-
ledgment of letters of attorney executed out of the state of
Maryland, and it appearing to be reasonable that as said defect
is merely formal it should be remedied ; Therefore,

Preamble

1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That the letter of attorney executed in Great Britain to and in
favour of the said Joseph King junior, and Lancelot Jacques,
of Warnal Hall, Washington county, in the state of Maryland,
by the Reverend Arthur Jacques, Letitia Jacques, and Eliza-
beth Cowtan, bearing date the twenty-ninth day of July, in the
year of our Lord eighteen hundred and twenty-three, and ac-
knowledged by them before Henry Hugall, esquire, chief ma-
gistrate of the borough and corporation of Scarborough, as cer-
tified by him under his hand, and the common seal of the said
borough, be, and the same is hereby declared to be, as valid and
effectual, to all intents and purposes, as if the same had been
executed and acknowledged in the manner prescribed by the
laws of this state; and that all acts and things done, or hereaf-
ter to be done, by the said Joseph King, junior, as attorney for
the parties aforesaid, by virtue of and under the authority
granted by said letter of attorney, shall have the same force and
effect as if said letter of attorney had been regularly acknow-
ledged according to law.

2. And be it enactcd, That the said Joseph King shall not
derive any power, or be invested with any authority by virtue
of this act, until he enters into bond to the state of Maryland,
to be taken by, the justices of the orphans court, of Baltimore
county, or any two of them, in such penal sum as the said jus-
tices shall direct, and with two good securities to be approved
of by the said justices, conditioned to pay over to Arthur Jac-
ques, Letitia Jacques and Elizabeth Cowtan, respectively, or
their respective assigns or representatives, such sum dr sums as
they are respectively entitled to, and as he shall receive by vir-
tue of the power of attorney mentioned in this act, and the
said bond shall be attested by the judges or justices before
whom the same shall be taken, and delivered by the said judge
