2-203.

The Director of the Survey shall exercise any power or duty and general
supervision over matters conferred upon the Survey by law, subject to the authority of
the Secretary.

2-204.

(a) There is a Commission of the Maryland Geological Survey in the Survey. It
consists of five members appointed by the Secretary from among citizens of the State
who have character, ability, and active interest in the proper development, use, and
conservation of geologic, mineral, and water resources. The members shall select their
own chairman. A member's term of office is five years. The Secretary may remove any
member for cause, and any vacancy shall be filled for the unexpired term. A member
may not receive compensation for his services, but shall be reimbursed for necessary
travel expenses and disbursements made in order to attend any meeting or perform any
other official duty.

(b) The Commission shall advise the Director of the Survey with respect to any
matter within the Survey's jurisdiction.

[Subtitle 3. Archaeological Activities]
[2-301.

In order to protect and preserve historical, archaeological, and scientific
information, matters and objects found on privately owned lands in the State, the
General Assembly declares that archaeological excavations on privately owned lands
should be discouraged except in accordance with the spirit and authority of this subtitle.
A person who knows the location of any archaeological site in the State is encouraged
to communicate the information to a reputable museum, an institution of higher
education, a recognized scientific or historical institution or society, or the Survey.]

2-302.

(A) (1) There is [a Division of] AN Archaeology [in the Survey] OFFICE IN
THE TRUST. The administrative head of the [Division is the State] OFFICE IS THE
CHIEF Archaeologist, who shall be a professional archaeologist whom the Director [of
the Survey appoints in accordance with the State merit system. The Director of the
Survey shall appoint, in accordance with the State merit system, assistants and other
employees provided in the State budget] EMPLOYS IN ACCORDANCE WITH §
5-609 OF THIS SUBTITLE. THE DIRECTOR SHALL ALSO EMPLOY A STATE
TERRESTRIAL ARCHAEOLOGIST AND A STATE UNDERWATER
ARCHAEOLOGIST IN ACCORDANCE WITH § 5-609 OF THIS SUBTITLE.

(2) EACH ARCHAEOLOGIST EMPLOYED UNDER THIS
SUBSECTION SHALL POSSESS AN ADVANCED DEGREE IN ARCHAEOLOGY
OR A CLOSELY RELATED FIELD FROM AN ACCREDITED COLLEGE OR
UNIVERSITY.

(B) ALL ARCHAEOLOGISTS WITHIN THE TRUST AND EMPLOYEES
