SECRET SESSIONS May 2,

THURSDAY, May 2d, 1861.

All the Senators present.

Mr. Yellott moved that the bill entitled, An Act to provide for
the Safety and Peace of the people of Maryland, be read the
second time to the exclusion of all business.

Mr. Kimmel raised the following point of order:

That, inasmuch as the Senate is engaged in Legislative busi-
ness, there is no warrant or authority in the Constitution to trans-
act that business in Secret Session.

The President of the Senate decided the point of order bad.

Mr. Stone submitted the following point of order:

That when the Senate adjourned, it did so to meet at 9 o'clock,
for the purpose of having one hour of Secret Session, and at 10
o'clock to resume open session.

Mr. Yellott moved to adjourn until half-past eleven o'clock,
and then go into Secret Session.

On motion of Mr. Stone,

The roll was called, and the following members answered to
their names:

Messrs. Brooke, President; Blackistone, Bradley, Duvall,
Dashiell, Franklin, Grahame, Gardmer, Goldsborough, of Talbot,
Goldsborough, of Dorchester, Heckart, Kimmel, Lynch, McKaig,
Miles, Nuttle, Stone, Townsend, Watkins, Whitaker, Yellott—21.

Pending the absence of the Sergeant-at-Arms to notify the ab-
sent Senators,

Mr. Dashiel moved that further proceedings under the call be
dispensed with.
