CUPATIONAL PROFILE: surveyor, 1729; probably
a planter. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE:
Lower House, Queen Anne's County, 1740-1741
(elected to the 1st session of the 1739-1741 As-
sembly to fill vacancy), 1742-1744. LOCAL OF-
FICES St. Paul's Parish Vestry, 1726-1728; St.
Luke's Parish Vestry, 1730-1733, 1740-1743;
deputy surveyor, Queen Anne's County, 1729;
justice. Queen Anne's County, 1734-1736, 1739-
ca. 1746/47 (quorum, 1735-1736, 1739-ca. 1746/
47); sheriff, Queen Anne's County, 1736-1739;
visitor, Queen Anne's County Free School, 1739
until his death. MILITARY SERVICE: called captain,

1742. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST

ELECTION: 520 acres in Queen Anne's County
(320 acres inherited from his father, 200 acres
probably inherited from his brother Charles). SIG-
NIFICANT CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST ELEC-
TION AND DEATH: purchased at least 175 acres in
Queen Anne's County, 1742; probably inherited
300 acres from his brother Jonathan, 1740; 88
acres added in a resurvey, 1746. WEALTH AT DEATH.
DIED: between November 14, 1746, and January
8, 1746/47, in Queen Anne's County. PERSONAL
PROPERTY: TEV, £501.6.8 current money (in-
cluding 1 servant, 5 slaves, a parcel of books, and
a case of platting instruments); FB, £400.17.3.

WRIGHT, SAMUEL TURBUTT (ca. 1749-1810).
BORN: probably in 1749 at "Walnut Grove" on
Reed's Creek, Queen Anne's County; eldest son.
NATIVE: fourth generation. RESIDED, in St. Paul's
Parish, Queen Anne's County. FAMILY BACK-
GROUND. FATHER: Nathan Samuel Turbutt Wright
(?-1792), son of Thomas Hynson Wright (1687/
88-1747) and wife Mary Turbutt, of Queen Anne's
County. MOTHER: Dorcas (last name unknown).
STEPMOTHER: Francis (last name unknown). UN-
CLE: Thomas Wright (?-ca. 1784). AUNTS: Mary
Ann Wright (?-1747), who married William Hop-
per (1707-1772); Ann Wright (?-by 1754), who
married Edward Oldham (1709-1773). BROTHER:
Thomas Hynson (?-by 1792). HALF BROTHERS:
Henry; James; and John. SISTERS: Mary, who
married (first name unknown) Betton; Rachel,
who married (first name unknown) Minor. FIRST
COUSINS: William Hopper (by 1747-1806); Ann
Oldham (?-by 1794), who married Joshua Clarke
(?-1781); Elizabeth Oldham (?-by 1776), who
married William Hopper (by 1747-1806); Eliza-
beth Hopper (1739-1806), who married Joseph

Nicholson, Jr. (?-1786); and Mary Ann Hopper
(1742-?), who married James Bordley (?-ca. 1793).
MARRIED first, Mary (Polly), daughter of Clement
Sewell (ca. 1737-1795) and wife Rachel Clayton.
Mary was the granddaughter of Solomon Clayton
(1685-1739). Her half brother was Edward
DeCoursey (ca. 1759-1827). Her half sister was
Sarah DeCoursey, who married Robert Wright
(1752-1826). MARRIED second, in 1792, his cousin
Ann (?-1848), daughter of Thomas Wright (?-
ca. 1784) and wife Rachel Clayton. Ann was the
niece of Mary Ann Wright (?-1747), who mar-
ried William Hopper (1707-1772); Ann Wright
(?-by 1754), who married Edward Oldham (1709-
1773). Her cousins were William Hopper (by 1747-
1806); Ann Oldham (?- by 1794), who married
William Hopper (by 1747-1806); Hannah Oldham
(?-1828), who married Nicholas Martin (ca. 1749-
1783); Elizabeth Hopper (1739-1806), who mar-
ried Joseph Nicholson, Jr. (?-1786); and Mary
Ann Hopper (1742-?), who married James Bor-
dley (?- ca. 1793). CHILDREN. SON: Samuel (by

1789-?). DAUGHTER: Mary. PRIVATE CAREER. ED-
UCATION: literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION. An-
glican, Chester Church, St. Paul's Parish, Queen
Anne's County. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES:
Gent., by 1781; Esq., by 1787. Original member
of the Society of Cincinnati. OCCUPATIONAL PRO-
FILE probably a planter. PUBLIC CAREER. STATE
OFFICES. Executive Council, 1780-1781, 1781-
1782, 1783-1784 (elected on December 26, 1783,
to fill vacancy), 1784-1785, 1785-1786; adjutant
general, 1807-1810. LOCAL OFFICES: register of
wills. Queen Anne's County, 1779-1780; justice,
Queen Anne's County, 1784; clerk of Queen
Anne's County, 1787-1810; commissioner of
Centreville, Queen Anne's County, 1799. MILI-
TARY SERVICE: 2nd lieutenant in Capt. Edward
Veasey's Seventh Independent Maryland Com-
pany, January 14, 1776; taken prisoner at Long
Island, August 27, 1776, exchanged April 20, 1778;
captain, 2nd Maryland Regiment, December 10,
1776, resigned July 1, 1779. STANDS ON PUBLIC/
PRIVATE ISSUES, manumitted 4 slaves between 1798
and 1805. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. PERSONAL
PROPERTY: 27 slaves, 1790. Wright mortgaged all
his personal property in 1800 and a large portion
of it again in 1804, probably because of expenses
incurred through his involvement in numerous
Chancery Court cases between 1789 and 1806.
LAND AT FIRST ELECTION, at least 850 acres in
Queen Anne's County. SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN
