in 1734, in St. Anne's Parish, Anne Arundel
County; fifth son. NATIVE: third generation. RE-
SIDED: in Anne Arundel County; Baltimore County

by 1757. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER: John

Worthington (1689/90-1766) of Anne Arundel
County, a merchant; son of John Worthington
(1650-1701) and wife Sarah Howard. John mar-
ried first, in 1713/14, Helen, daughter of Thomas
Hammond (?-ca. 1724/25). MOTHER: Comfort
(probably 1701-probably 1741/42), probably the
daughter of John Hammond (1665-1742/43) and
wife Anne Greenberry (1676-1723). UNCLE:
Thomas Worthington (ca. 1691-1752/53). AUNT:
probably Rachel Hammond (1708-ca. 1749), who
married John Moale (?-1740). BROTHERS: John
(1728-1790), who married Susannah Hood;
Thomas (1739-1821), who married first, Eliza-
beth Hammond, and second, Marcella Owings
(1748-1842). HALF BROTHERS: William (1715-
1750), who married Hannah Rattenbury Crom-
well; Charles (1716-?); and Vachel (1718-by
1779), who married Priscilla Bond. HALF SISTERS:
Anne (1720-?), who married Thomas Beale Dor-
sey; Elizabeth (1722-?), who married Nicholas

1777), daughter of Walter Tolley (?-1783) and
wife Mary Garretson; stepdaughter of Martha Hall
(1720-1801). Mary was the granddaughter of
Thomas Tolley (?-1732). Her brothers were
Thomas (1738-1743); Walter Tolley, Jr. (1744-
1776); James (1746-1768); and Thomas Garret-
son (1748-?). Her half brother was Edward Car-
vel (1753-ca. 1796). Her sisters were Elizabeth
(1736-1785); Sophia (1742-?). Her half sisters
were Martha (1755-1755); Martha (1758-?); and
Ann (1756-1830). MARRIED second, on July 25,
1778, Martha Garretson (1753-1831). CHILDREN.

(1768-?), daughter of Brice T. B. Worthington
(1727-1794); Walter (1765-?), who married Sarah
(1772-1833), daughter of John Hood, Jr. (?-ca.

married Susan Johns; Thomas Tolley (1771-1843),
who married first, Lydia Whipps, and second,
Avery Whipps; James Tolley (1771-1829), who
married Margaret P. Stade; Edward (1773-1846),

1811); Nicholas (1779-?), who married Mary
Jones; Garet Garrettson (1797-?), who married
first, in 1820, Julia Price, and second, Elizabeth
Scott. Thomas, James, and Edward moved to

married in 1810 Abraham Larsh; Susannah (1789-

Eleanor (Ellen) (1790-1877), who married in 1815

1859), who married Turner Morehead; and Eliz-

tions, Baltimore County, 2nd-3rd, 1774, 4th, 1775
(elected, but did not attend); Lower House, Bal-
timore County, 1781-1782 (Manufactories 1, 2),
1782-1783 (Claims 1). LOCAL OFFICES: church-
warden, St. Thomas' Parish, Baltimore County,
1757; St. Thomas' Parish Vestry, Baltimore
County, 1762-1764; justice, Baltimore County,
commissioned 1769, 1772, 1773, 1782 (did not
qualify), and 1787 (did not qualify); Committee
of Observation, Back River Upper Hundred,
Baltimore County, elected 1774; commissioner of
the tax, Baltimore County, appointed 1786.

WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. PERSONAL PROPERTY:

assessed value £1,740.12.0, including 29 slaves
and 122 oz. plate, 1783; 33 slaves, 1790. LAND AT
FIRST ELECTION: 1,743 acres in Baltimore County
(1,000 acres inherited from his father, 1766). SIG-
NIFICANT CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST ELEC-
TION AND DEATH: charged with 1,709 acres in Bal-
timore County, 1783; purchased and patented ca.
400 acres in Baltimore County in 1780s. WEALTH
AT DEATH. DIED: on April 7, 1815. Buried at St.
John's Church, Baltimore County. PERSONAL
PROPERTY: TEV, $133,494.69 current money (in-
cluding 35 slaves, books, silver valued at $228.00,
and over $74,000.00 located in bank accounts and
cash in his home); FB, $126,844.71 prior to pay-
