BIOGRAPHIES WAT

Thomas Howell (?-1677). CHILDREN. SONS: Hum-
phrey, Jr. (1655-1695), a justice of Charles County,
1676-1691, sheriff, 1691-1694, colonel by 1689,
who married Margery, widow of Robert Row-
land, daughter of John Cage; Thomas (?-1710),
who married first, by 1688, Mary, daughter of
William Barton, and second, Jane (last name un-
known); Abraham; and another son (name un-
known). PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: literate.
RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Protestant. SOCIAL STA-
TUS AND ACTIVITIES: called Mr., at first appear-
ance in records; son active in Revolution of Prot-
estant Associators, 1689. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE:
merchant of London just prior to departure from
England; factor to William Barrett and Thomas
Tolsen, who were active in the indentured servant
trade; planter. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE
SERVICE. Lower House, Charles County, 1671
(elected, but died before the 1st session of the
1671-1674/75 Assembly). LOCAL OFFICE: justice,
Charles County, 1667-ca. 1670/71. WEALTH DUR-
ING LIFETIME. PERSONAL PROPERTY: 8 Servants,

1669. LAND: over 300 acres. WEALTH AT DEATH.
DIED: prior to March 27, 1671. PERSONAL PROP-
ERTY: TEV, at least 8,150 pounds of tobacco (in-
cluding 1 servant); probably had turned over his
major assets to his son, Humphrey, before death.

WATERS, JOHN (?-1708). BORN, probably in
Northampton County, Virginia; of age by 1671.
IMMIGRATED: from Northampton County, Vir-
ginia. RESIDED: probably near the north side of
the Annemessex River, Somerset County. FAM-
ILY BACKGROUND. FATHER: Col. William Waters
(?-1685), a merchant who was burgess and jus-
tice in Northampton County, Virginia, in the 1650s;
a revision of colonial boundaries probably put
some of his Virginia land in Maryland. ADDI-
TIONAL COMMENTS: William was the son of Ed-
ward Waters (1568-1630), Gent., of Yorkshire,
England, who was in Virginia as early as 1608.
MOTHER: probably Margaret Robins (?-by 1663),
widow of George Clark. STEPMOTHER: by 1663,
Dorothy (last name unknown). BROTHERS OR
HALF BROTHERS: Thomas; Obedience; Edward;
William, Gent., of Northampton County, Vir-
ginia, who married Isabel Harmanson; and Rich-
ard, (?-1720), Gent., of Somerset County, who
married Elizabeth (?-1754), daughter of Southy
Littleton (?-1679) of Accomack County, Vir-
ginia. MARRIED Mary, daughter of Lazarus Mad-
dox (ca. 1656-1716/17) and wife Sarah. Mary was
the niece of John Bozman (1650-1716). She sub-

sequently married by 1711 John Cottman (?-1728).
CHILDREN. SONS: John (ca. 1702-1761), Gent., who
married Mary Elizabeth, daughter of Col. Peter
Hack of Virginia; William Waters, Sr. (?-1781);
and Edward (1707-1784). DAUGHTER: Sarah.

PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: literate. RELIGIOUS

AFFILIATION: Protestant; his brother Richard
Waters was a prominent member of the Anne-
messex Meeting of the Society of Friends, which
often met at his home on the north side of the
Annemessex River. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE:
planter. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE:
Lower House, Somerset County, 1704-1707.

WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST ELEC-
TION: sold over 700 acres in 1704, but still owned
at least 325 acres; acquired another 120 acres in
1705. WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: between March 2,
1707/8, and June 15, 1708, in Somerset County.
PERSONAL PROPERTY: TEV, at least £207.18.4
(including 2 slaves). LAND: ca. 445 acres.

WATERS, JOHN (ca. 1727-1784). BORN: ca. 1727,
probably in Coventry Parish, Somerset County;
eldest son. NATIVE: third generation. RESIDED in
Calvert County, 1758-ca. 1774; on Quantico
Creek, Rewastico Hundred, Somerset County,

1774-1784. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER: John

Waters (ca. 1702-1761) of Somerset County, son
of John Waters (?-1708). MOTHER: Mary Eliza-
beth, daughter of Col. Peter Hack of Accomack
County, Virginia. UNCLE: William Waters, Sr. (?-
1781). BROTHERS: Spencer Martrum (1730-ca.
1780), Gent., of Dorchester County; William
Waters (ca. 1736-1815), a possible legislator;
George Nicholas Severn (1738-by 1784); Edward
(1740-ca. 1772), a merchant; Littleton (1742-
1778), who married in 1765 Esther, daughter of
Littleton Waters (?-1750) of Calvert County; and
Peter Waters (1744/45-1806). FIRST COUSINS: Wil-
liam Waters (1740-1804), a possible legislator;
Richard Waters, Jr. (?-?). MARRIED ca. 1756 Eliz-
abeth (?-ca. 1786), daughter of Francis Hutchins
(Hutchings) (?-1738) of Calvert County and wife
Elizabeth Waters (?-ca. 1744). Elizabeth was the
niece of Esther Waters, who married Henry Lowes
(?-1767). Her brothers were Richard; Francis
(?-1747) of Calvert County. CHILDREN. SON:
Francis Hutchings (?-1826). DAUGHTERS: Eliz-
abeth (?-ca. 1791), who married first, (first name
unknown) Maddux, and second, Richard Waters,
Jr. (?-?); Mary, who married (first name un-
known) King; and Sarah (1757-?), who married
