(ca. 1714-1808). BROTHERS: William (1758-1813);
James (?-1781); and John (?-by 1808). SISTER:
Elizabeth (Betsy) (?-by 1808), who married Wil-
liam Courts (ca. 1753-1792). PRIVATE CAREER. ED-
UCATION: literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: his
brother William served on the All Faith Parish
Vestry, St. Mary's County, 1800. SOCIAL STATUS

AND ACTIVITIES: Esq., by 1787. PUBLIC CAREER.

LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Lower House, 1787-1788
(accused with other members of the St. Mary's
County delegation of "treating"; discharged May
20, 1788, during the 2nd session of the 1787-1788
Assembly), 1788. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND
AT FIRST ELECTION: 200 acres in St. Mary's County
(purchased from his father). SIGNIFICANT CHANGES

IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST ELECTION AND DEATH:

sold 200 acres in St. Mary's County to his brother

THOMAS, JOHN (?-ca. 1717/18). IMMIGRATED:
ca. 1676, as an indentured servant. RESIDED: in
Baltimore County. MARRIED first, Jane, widow or
daughter of William Clapham of Lancaster County,
Virginia. MARRIED second, Sarah (last name un-
known). CHILDREN. SON: John. DAUGHTER: Pheby.
PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: literate. RELIGIOUS

AFFILIATION: Anglican, St. Paul's Parish, Balti-
more County. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: ar-
rived as a servant, but was free by 1680; overseer
of highways and jury foreman by 1683; Gent., by
1700, but apparently inactive politically after that
date; son held no office. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE:
servant until 1680; carpenter, planter. PUBLIC CA-
REER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Associators' Con-
vention, Baltimore County, 1689-1692; Grand
Committee of Twenty, 1690-1692. LOCAL OF-
FICES: justice, Baltimore County, 1689-1694,
1696-1700 (quorum, 1696-1700) (removed for
irregularities); sheriff, Baltimore County, 1694-
1696. MILITARY SERVICE: captain, 1689-1690;
major, 1690-1694; colonel, probably 1694-1700
(retained title until death). STANDS ON PUBLIC/
PRIVATE ISSUES: support of Protestant Associa-
tors' Revolution in 1689 brought first important
public offices. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. PER-
SONAL PROPERTY: owned one slave, 1692-1695.
LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: ca. 800 acres in Balti-
more County. WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: between

September 11, 1717, and January 3, 1717/18, in

ca. 1797). BORN: on August 17, 1734, in St. Pe-
ter's Parish, Talbot County; eldest son. NATIVE.
fourth generation. RESIDED: in Talbot County;
moved to St. Mary's County by 1771. FAMILY
BACKGROUND. FATHER: William Thomas (1705-
1767). MOTHER: Elizabeth Allen (by 1705-by
1757). STEPMOTHER: by 1757 Margaret Finney
Edmondson (?-ca. 1766), widow of John Ed-
mondson (1692-1743). AUNT: Elizabeth Thomas
(ca. 1701-1755), who married Edward Needles
(1695/96-1751/52). BROTHERS: William (?-1789);
Nicholas Thomas (?-ca. 1784); and James (?-
1810). STEPBROTHER: Samuel Edmondson (?-
1751). SISTER: Mary (ca. 1741-by 1767). STEP-
SISTER: Rachel Edmondson. FIRST COUSIN: John
Stevens (ca. 1735-1794). MARRIED first, by 1783
