sixth Viscount Dillon of Costello, daughter of
Richard Nugent, Earl of Westmeath. CHILDREN.

AFFILIATION. Catholic. SOCIAL STATUS AND AC-
TIVITIES: Talbot arrived with appointment as a
councillor. In 1671 he translated from the Latin
The Discoveries of John Lederer, which he pub-
lished in London in 1672. He succeeded to the
baronetcy in 1671, and returned to Ireland to
manage his family estate. Talbot was a close friend
of his cousin Charles Calvert, 3rd Lord Baltimore
(1637-1714/15). He was later called Sir William
Talbot of Listarton, County Meath. OCCUPA-
TIONAL PROFILE: placeman, planter. PUBLIC CA-
REER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE Upper House, 1671
(served only during the 1st session of the 1671-

TALBOTT, WILLIAM (?-1713). BORN: proba-
bly in Lancashire, England. IMMIGRATED: by 1692,
probably as a free adult. RESIDED: in Baltimore

County. FAMILY BACKGROUND. BROTHER: Thomas,

of Lancashire, England. MARRIED Katherine (?-
ca. 1762), daughter of George Ogg and wife Eliz-
abeth. Her brothers were John (1691-?); George,
Jr. (1696-?). Katherine subsequently married
Capt. John Risteau (?-1760), of Baltimore County.
CHILDREN. DAUGHTER. Margaret, who married in
1735 Benjamin Hammond (1706/7-?), brother of
Thomas Hammond (1693-?). PRIVATE CAREER.
EDUCATION: literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION:
Protestant. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: a tax-
able in the households of Nicholas Corbin, 1692,
and Thomas Richardson, 1694; began active ca-
reer in 1701; Gent., by 1708. OCCUPATIONAL PRO-
FILE: factor for George Purchas and Company,
London; merchant. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE
SERVICE: Lower House, Baltimore County, 1712-
1713 (election declared void during the 1st session
of the 1712-1714 Assembly; reelected to the 2nd
session and attended until he was "very sick";
died during or immediately after this session).

TIES: transported wife and son Philip by 1663; first
evidence of land ownership in 1663; no record of
any other offices held by him or his sons. OC-

County, 1678 (elected to the 2nd session of the
1676-1682 Assembly, but died before that ses-

in Calvert County. NATIVE: fifth generation. RE-
SIDED: at "Berry," also called "Taney Place," a
property lying between Battle Creek and the Pa-
tuxent River in Calvert County. FAMILY BACK-
GROUND. FATHER: Michael Taney (?-1758). STEP-
FATHER: George Wheeler. MOTHER: Jane,
daughter of Ignatius Doyne (?-1763) and wife
Mary, of Charles County. HALF AUNT: Sarah Ta-
ney (ca. 1744-by 1784), who married Ignatius
Fenwick (?-1784). BROTHERS: Thomas; Joseph
(1755-1844), who married in 1776 Dorothy (1756-
1817), daughter of Roger Brooke (1714-1772)
and wife Elizabeth Boarman, and who moved to
Frederick County. MARRIED ca. 1770 Monica
(1752-1814), daughter of Roger Brooke (1714-
1772) and wife Elizabeth Boarman. Her brothers
were Basil (1748-?), who married Ann, daughter
of James Duke and wife Mary; John (1753-1790),
who married Mary Wheeler. Her half brothers
were Roger (?-1776), who married Mary; John,
a twin (1737-died young); Bowyer, a twin (1737-
1815), who married first, Mary Browne, and sec-
