garet Terrett Holliday. DAUGHTERS. Elizabeth
Jenifer (?-1875), who never married; Eleanor,
who married George Robertson (?-1839). WARD:
his nephew Frederick (by 1769-1793), son of
Thomas Stone (1743-1787). PRIVATE CAREER. ED
UCATION: literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: prob-
ably Anglican. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: lawyer.

PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE. Lower

House, Charles County, 1780-1781 (elected to
the 2nd session of the 1780-1781 Assembly to fill
vacancy), 1781-1782 (Grievances 1), 1782-1783.
OTHER STATE OFFICES: Constitution Ratification
Convention, Charles County, 1778; appointed chief
judge of the 1st Judicial District of Maryland,
January 17, 1791, and served in that position until
January 28, 1802. LOCAL OFFICE: Committee of
Observation, Charles County, elected 1775. MIL-
ITARY SERVICE: 2nd lieutenant, Charles County
Militia, 1776. OUT OF STATE SERVICE: represent-
ative, U.S. Congress, 1789-1791. WEALTH DUR-

ING LIFETIME. PERSONAL PROPERTY: assessed Value

£612.11.8, including 6 slaves and 11 oz. plate,
1783; owned at least one share in the Potomac
Company, which he sold to his brother John in
1794; 18 slaves, 1798. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION:
probably 155 acres in Charles County. SIGNIFI-
CANT CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST ELEC-
TION AND DEATH: purchased 300 acres of confis-
cated British property in Charles County in 1782,
which he sold within a month; received as a gift
from his uncle, Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer (1723-
1790), one half of a lot in Port Tobacco, 1786;
purchased 840 acres in Charles County, 1792-
1804; patented 985 acres in Charles County, 1794-
1803; sold at least 669 acres between 1793 and
1798, an additional 492 acres between 1801 and
1805, and his lot in Port Tobacco, all in Charles
County. He was charged on the 1798 federal as-
sessment with 1,091 acres in Charles County, in-
cluding three dwelling houses. WEALTH AT DEATH.
DIED: will proven on April 1, 1812, in Charles
County; interred at his estate "Equality" near
Port Tobacco. PERSONAL PROPERTY: TEV, at least
$4,693.89 current money (including 8 slaves, plate,
and 200 books on law, history, philosophy, and
religion). LAND: ca. 820 acres in Charles County.

STONE, THOMAS (1677-1727). BORN, in 1677,
in Charles County; eldest son. NATIVE: second
generation. RESIDED, in Nanjemoy Hundred,
Charles County. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER:
John Stone (ca. 1648-1697), son of William Stone
(ca. 1603-ca. 1659/60). STEPFATHERS: both Hugh

Tears (?-1699/1700) and John Beale, of Lawson

(ca. 1674-1751). MOTHER: Elizabeth, possibly the
daughter of Thomas Warren. STEPMOTHER: Eli-
nor Bayne, daughter of Walter Bayne (?-1670).
Elinor subsequently married John Beale, of Law-
son (ca. 1674-1751). BROTHERS: John (?-1703);
Matthew (ca. 1679-1750). HALF BROTHER: Wal-
ter. HALF SISTERS: Elinor; Elizabeth. FIRST COUS-
INS. William Stone (1666-1731). MARRIED first,
either Jane (1681-?); Benedicta (1685-?); Eliz-
abeth (1687-?); or Margaret (1694-?), daughters
of Philip Hoskins (ca. 1650-1718) by his first wife
Elizabeth Wahob. Their stepmother was Ann
Mathews. Their brothers were William (1690-
1727); Philip, Jr. (1696-?). Their half brothers
were Oswald (1699-1720); Bennett (1701-?); and
Ballard (1703-?). Their half sisters were Mary
Ann; Martha (ca. 1705-?). MARRIED second,
Catherine. CHILDREN. SONS: possibly Thomas;
David (1709-1773), who married first, Sarah
(1714-by 1741) or Mary, both daughters of Sam-
uel Hanson (ca. 1685-1740), and second, Eliza-
beth, daughter of Dr. Daniel Jenifer (?-ca. 1729).
DAUGHTERS: Mary, who married William (ca.
1717-1766), son of Robert Hanson (ca. 1680-1748);
Anne (?-1761), who married Roger (1696-?),
son of Gerard Fowke (1662/63-1734/35). PRIVATE

ATION: Protestant. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVI-
TIES: third generation provincial officeholder; sons

AT DEATH. DIED: will probated November 7, 1727,
in Nanjemoy Parish, Charles County. PERSONAL

cluding 1 servant and 14 slaves); FB, £626.5.7.

STONE, THOMAS (1743-1787). BORN: in 1743
at "Poynton Manor," Durham Parish, Charles
County. NATIVE: fourth generation, fifth gener-
ation in America. RESIDED: in Frederick Town,
Frederick County, from 1764 until 1771; "Haber
de Venture," Port Tobacco West Hundred, Charles
County, from 1771 until death. FAMILY BACK-
GROUND. FATHER: David Stone (1709-1773), a
Charles County landowner, who was the son of
Thomas Stone (1677-1727), and who married first,
Sarah (1714-by 1741) or Mary Hanson, both
daughters of Samuel Hanson (ca. 1685-1740).
MOTHER: Elizabeth (?-by 1778), daughter of Dr.
