STODDERT, JAMES (ca. 1667-1726). BORN: ca.
1667, probably in Scotland. IMMIGRATED: by 1695,
as a free adult. RESIDED: in Piscataway Hundred,
Prince George's County, by 1713. MARRIED Eliz-
abeth (?-1749/50), daughter of John Batie of Anne
Arundel County. She subsequently married
Thomas Marshall (1694-1759), Gent., of Charles
County. CHILDREN. SONS: James, Jr. (?-ca. 1726),
who married Sarah, daughter of George Parker
(?-ca. 1729) and wife Susanna of Calvert County;
John Stoddert (?-1767); William (?-1736/37);
Benjamin, who led an expedition against Canada
in 1746 and married Sabrina, daughter of Rev.
John Donaldson (?-1748) and wife Elizabeth (?-
1756) of St. Mary's County; and Thomas, who
fought Indians in Western Maryland and married
Janet, daughter of Rev. John Donaldson (?-1748)
and wife Elizabeth (?-1756) of St. Mary's County.

session of the 1712-1714 Assembly; Laws 3, 4),
1716-1718 (Laws 1-3), 1719-1721/22 (Laws 1-
5, probably chairman 2-5), 1722-1724 (Laws 1-
3, probably chairman), 1725-1725/26 (Laws 1, 2,
probably chairman; died before the 3rd session
of the 1725-1727 Assembly). OTHER PROVINCIAL
OFFICE: justice, Provincial Court, 1716-1726. LO-
CAL OFFICES King George's Parish Vestry, 1696-
1698/99; justice, Prince George's County, 1699-
1702, 1702-1716 (quorum, 1706-1716). MILI-
TARY SERVICE: major, 1714. WEALTH DURING LIFE-
TIME. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: at least 5,150 acres.

WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: between March 29 and
May 31, 1726. in Prince George's County. PER-
SONAL PROPERTY: TEV. £793.7.2 (including 25
slaves and many books); FB. £192.17.4. LAND, at
least 6,941 acres.

STODDERT, JOHN (?-1767). BORN: in Prince
George's (later became Charles) County; prob-
ably the second of five sons. NATIVE: second gen-
eration. RESIDED on a 1.264-acre tract, "South-

hampton Enlarged," on the Potomac River at
Pomonkey Creek, which was originally in Prince
George's County but later became part of Charles

County. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER: James

Stoddert (ca. 1667-1726). STEPFATHER: Thomas
Marshall (1694-1759), Gent., of Charles County.
MOTHER: Elizabeth Batie (?-1749/50). BROTH-
ERS: James, Jr., (?-ca. 1726); William (?-1736/

Thomas Hanson Marshall (1731-1801). HALF sis
TERS: Elizabeth Marshall (1727-1727); Mary
Marshall (1729-1753), Elizabeth Marshall (1732-
1739); and Sarah Marshall (1735-1795), who
married on February 27, 1752, John Dent, of George
(ca. 1733-1809). NEPHEW: Benjamin Stoddert (ca.
1751-1813). MARRIED by 1728 Marianne, daugh-
ter of Thomas Trueman Greenfield (1682-1733)
and wife Susannah (1680-1730). Marianne was
the stepdaughter of Anne (1694-1759), who was
the widow of Frances Wilkinson and the daughter
of Walter Smith (?-1711). Marianne was the
granddaughter of both Thomas Greenfield (ca.
1649-1715) and Kenelm Cheseldyne (1640-1708).
She was the niece of Kenelm Cheseldyne (1683-
1719); Mary Cheseldyne (1678-?), who married
first, James Hay (?-by 1717/18); Dryden Che-
seldyne (1687-1760), who married first, Henry
Peregrine Jowles (1681-1720); and Jane Green-
field, who married Henry Holland Hawkins (1683-
1751). Her brothers or half brothers were Thomas
Truman; Kenelm Truman; Gerard Truman; Na-
thaniel; James; and Walter (?-by 1745). Her sis-
ter or half sister was Sabrina (1715-1768), who
married Thomas Marshall (1694-1759), Gent.,
of Charles County. Her first cousins were Josias
Hawkins (ca. 1735-1789); Eleanor Hawkins, who
married George Dent (?-1785). Her niece was
Anne Truman Greenfield, who married in 1768
Patrick Sim Smith (1749-ca. 1793). CHILDREN. SONS:
James Truman (1728-?); John Truman Stoddert
(1732-1765); Thomas Truman (1733/34-?); Wil-
liam Truman (1736/37-1770), who married Eliz-
abeth; Kenhelm Truman (1739-?), who married
Letty; Richard Truman (1741/42-1769); and
Walter Truman (1747-1772), who married Mar-
garet, daughter of Bayne Smallwood (ca. 1711-
1768) and wife Priscilla Heabard (?-1784).
DAUGHTERS: Mary Truman (1744-?), who mar-
ried Benjamin Fendall; Marianne Truman, who
married (first name unknown) Alexander. PRI-
