this was itemized in his will along with other un-

RUMSEY, WILLIAM (1729/30-ca. 1777). BORN:
on March 21, 1729/30, probably at his father's
plantation at the head of the Bohemia River, Ce-
cil County; eldest surviving son. NATIVE: third
generation. RESIDED: at the head of the Bohemia
River, Cecil County. FAMILY BACKGROUND.
FATHER: William Rumsey (1698-1742/43). STEP-
FATHER: Nathaniel Rigbie (1695-?). MOTHER:
Sabina (Sabrinah) (?-1779), daughter of Ben-
jamin Blaidenburgh and wife Margaret. BROTH-
ERS: Charles (1729-1729); Benjamin Rumsey
(1734-1808); Charles Rumsey (1736-1780); and
John Rumsey (ca. 1742-1828). SISTERS: Margaret
(1732-?); Henrietta. MARRIED Susanna. CHIL-
DREN. SONS: Nathan; William; and John, who
served in the Lower House from Cecil County in
1799, and who married Ann (Anna). DAUGH-
TERS: Sabina, who married William Hall of Har-
ford County; Amelia, who married (probably
Augustine) Boyer. PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION:
literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Anglican, St.
Stephen's Church, North Sassafras Parish, Cecil

farmer. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: 5th
Convention, Cecil County, 1775. OTHER STATE
OFFICE 5th Council of Safety, Eastern Shore, 1776
(declined). LOCAL OFFICES: justice, Cecil County,
1763-at least 1774 (quorum, 1768-at least 1774).
MILITARY SERVICE: called captain by 1763; first
major, Bohemia Battalion, Cecil County Militia,
elected 1776. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT
FIRST ELECTION: ca. 3,000 acres in Cecil County
(inherited ca. 1,500 acres; acquired ca. 1,500 acres
by patent and purchase). WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED:
between August 21, 1776, and March 12, 1777,

1631, probably as an indentured servant. RE-

ATION: probably Protestant. SOCIAL STATUS AND
ACTIVITIES: arrived as a servant, but free by 1642;
Gent., at death. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: serv-
ant, employed in the kitchen and later as a laborer
for Cloberry & Co., 1631-at least 1636; planter.

PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Lower

House, Kent County, 1659/60. LOCAL OFFICES.

CUPATIONAL PROFILE: planter; ordinary keeper.
PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Lower

House, Cecil County, 1674/75 (elected to the 4th
session of the 1671-1674/75 Assembly). LOCAL
OFFICE: clerk, Baltimore County, 1669-1674.

WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST ELEC-
TION: 1,400 acres. WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: will
probated July 29, 1675, in Cecil County. PER-
SONAL PROPERTY: TEV, at least 19,725 pounds
of tobacco (including 2 servants); FB, 4,161 pounds
of tobacco. LAND: 1,400 acres.

SALTER, JOHN (?-1715). BORN: in England.

IMMIGRATED: by 1681 as a free adult. RESIDED:

in Kent and Talbot (later became Queen Anne's)
counties alternately, by 1681; Queen Anne's
County, 1706-1715. FAMILY BACKGROUND.
NEPHEW: Jonathan Gunthrope, a pewterer in
London. ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: Although there
was in Kent County during this period a John
Salter (1625-1660/61) who immigrated by 1646,
who possibly married Jane, widow of Francis
Lumbard, and who devised personal property to
his wife and unnamed child in his will, there is
no evidence to connect him with the burgess and
master carpenter John Salter. MARRIED first, by
1687, Mary, daughter of Thomas Bostick (?-ca.
1688) of Cecil County. MARRIED second, Sarah.
MARRIED third, ca. 1699, Bridget, widow of John
