Both of Rider's parents died on the voyage from
England, so he was raised by his grandparents at
their estate "Weston" in Dorchester County. In
his will, Charles Hutchins (?-1700) appointed
Thomas Hicks (1659-1722) to be guardian for Ri-
der until he became 18. MARRIED first, on January
23, ca. 1706, Ann (ca. 1684-ca. 1733), daughter
of Thomas Hicks (1659-1722) and wife Sarah
Denwood. Ann was the niece of Elizabeth Den-
wood, who married Henry Hooper (ca. 1643-1720);
and Mary Denwood, who married Roger Woolford
(?-ca. 1701/2). Her brothers were Levin (?-ca.
