RID BIOGRAPHIES

acreage was in the part of Dorchester County that
later became Caroline County; purchased at least
185 acres in Caroline County, 1792. WEALTH AT
DEATH. DIED, on June 24, 1825, in Caroline County;
he had been ill for several weeks. PERSONAL
PROPERTY: requested no appraisal of estate; men-
tioned at least 53 slaves, 1 sloop, and his gun
"Greentree" in his will; penalty on his adminis-
tration bond was $30,000 current money. LAND:
at least 1,165 acres in Caroline County.

RIDER, JOHN (1686-1739/40). BORN: on Oc-
tober 30, 1686, in England; only child. IMMI-
GRATED between 1686 and 1699 as a minor from
England. RESIDED: at "Weston," Dorchester

County. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER: John Rl-

der. MOTHER Ann, educated in England and
married there, only daughter of Charles Hutchins
(?-1700) and wife Ann. ADDITION AL COMMENTS:
Both of Rider's parents died on the voyage from
England, so he was raised by his grandparents at
their estate "Weston" in Dorchester County. In
his will, Charles Hutchins (?-1700) appointed
Thomas Hicks (1659-1722) to be guardian for Ri-
der until he became 18. MARRIED first, on January
23, ca. 1706, Ann (ca. 1684-ca. 1733), daughter
of Thomas Hicks (1659-1722) and wife Sarah
Denwood. Ann was the niece of Elizabeth Den-
wood, who married Henry Hooper (ca. 1643-1720);
and Mary Denwood, who married Roger Woolford
(?-ca. 1701/2). Her brothers were Levin (?-ca.
1731); Thomas. Her first cousins were Mary
Hooper (1674-1745), who married Henry Ennalls
(1675-1734); Elizabeth Hooper, who married
Matthew Travers (ca. 1672-1742); Mary Wool-
ford (1663-1740), who married Henry Hooper (ca.
1643-1720); Elizabeth Woolford (1664-1738),
who married first, Thomas Ennalls (?-1718), and
second, William Holland (?-1732); Sarah Wool-
ford (ca. 1672-?), who married Covert Looker-
man (ca. 1681-1728); and Roger Woolford (1670-
1730). Her niece was Ann Hicks (?-1773), who
married Henry Travers (?-1765). MARRIED sec-
ond. Mary (?-ca. 1757), widow of Levin Hicks
(?-ca. 1731), daughter of Henry Hooper (ca. 1643-
1720) and wife Mary Woolford (1663- 1740). Mary
was the granddaughter of Roger Woolford (?-ca.
1701/2) . She was the niece of Roger Woolford (1670-
1730); Elizabeth Woolford (1664-1738), who
married first, Thomas Ennalls (?-1718), and sec-
ond, William Holland (?-1732); and Sarah Wool-
ford (ca. 1672-?), who married Covert Looker-
man (ca. 1681-1728). Her brothers were Henry
Hooper (ca. 1687-1767); Thomas; John (?-1754);

James (1703-1789); and Roger. Her sisters were
Anne (?-1761), who married John Broome (1676-
ca. 1738/39); Rosannah; Sarah; Rebecca; and
Priscilla. Her half sisters were Mary (1674-1745),
who married Henry Ennalls (1675-1734); Eliza-
beth, who married Matthew Travers (ca. 1672-
1742). Her first cousins were Thomas Woolford
(ca. 1699-ca. 1 750/51) -James Woolford (ca. 1736-
ca. 1783); Rosannah Woolford, who married sec-
ond, Joseph Cox Gray (?-1764). Her nephews
were Henry Hooper (ca. 1727-1790); John Brome
(1703-1748). CHILDREN. SONS: Hutchins (1706-
1706), stillborn; John, Jr. (1708-ca. 1733); Capt.
Charles (1716-1741), never married; Hutchins
(1718-1732); and twin sons, unnamed (1724-
1724), stillborn. STEPSONS: Levin Hicks (?-1753),
who married Mary, widow of Bartholomew En-
nalls (?-ca. 1741/42), daughter of Henry Hooper
(ca. 1687-1767); Henry Hicks; Denwood Hicks;
and John Hicks. DAUGHTERS: Sarah (1710-?),
who married first, Thomas Nevett, a merchant,
second, William Fishwick, and third, Robert Dar-
nall; Ann (1713-1756), who married first, on
September 25, 1728, Maj. James Billings (?-1747),
and second, on November 13, 1751, Govert
Lockerman (?-1753), son of Govert Lockerman
(ca. 1681-1728); and Dorothy (1725-?), who
married John Henry (ca. 1714-1781). STEP-
DAUGHTERS: Mary Hicks, who married Richard
Parker; Sarah Hicks; and Ann Hicks (?-1773),
who married Henry Travers (?-1765). ADDI-
TIONAL COMMENTS: Rider's stepchildren by his
second wife were also the nieces and nephews of
his first wife. His second wife had previously mar-
ried his first wife's brother. PRIVATE CAREER. ED-
UCATION: literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: An-
glican. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: Gent., by

1711; Hon. and Esq., by 1738. OCCUPATIONAL
PROFILE: called yeoman. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGIS-
LATIVE SERVICE: Lower House, Dorchester
County, 1719-1721/22 (Accounts 2-4), 1725-1727
(Accounts 1-4); Upper House, 1729-1731 (ap-
pointed prior to the 2nd session of the 1728-1731
Assembly), 1732-1734, 1734/35-1737 (Bills of
Credit 1), 1738 (appointed, but did not attend),
1739 (appointed, but did not attend; died before
the 1st session of the 1739-1740 Assembly). OTHER
PROVINCIAL OFFICE: Council, 1729-1739/40
(qualified on July 10, 1729). LOCAL OFFICES: jus-
tice. Dorchester County, 1708-at least 1731
(quorum, 1727-at least 1731); public school com-
missioner. Dorchester County, in office 1723.
MILITARY SERVICE: captain, by 1708; colonel by
