Somerset County, 1713. WEALTH DURING LIFE-
TIME. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: probably 1,300

acres (inherited from father). WEALTH AT DEATH.
DIED: will made November 3, 1722, proved April
2, 1723, in Somerset County. PERSONAL PROP-
ERTY: TEV, at least £1,003.3.5 current money
(including 12 slaves, one of whom was an Indian,
1 apprentice, books, gold, cash, plate worth
£53.2.5, and 4,274 pounds of tobacco). LAND: at
least 4,360 acres in Somerset County.

(?-1796). BORN: of age by 1760. NATIVE: fourth
generation. RESIDED: in Synepuxon Hundred,
Worcester County. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER:
John Purnell (?-1755), son of Thomas Purnell (? -
1723). MOTHER: Elizabeth Rackliffe (?-ca. 1754).
BROTHERS: Zadock Purnell (?-1805); William
Purnell (?-1777), a possible legislator; and Capt.
John (?-ca. 1761). SISTERS: Elizabeth; Levina;
Arralantar (?-1782), who married Thomas Ro-
bins (ca. 1702-1766); and Zipporah (Zeporah).
FIRST COUSINS: Thomas Purnell, of Thomas (?-
1790); William Purnell (1739-1796), a possible
legislator. NEPHEWS. John Purnell Robins (ca. 1742-
1780); William Purnell (?-1798). NIECES: Ann
Purnell, who married first, Henry Dennis (?-1785),
and second, William Polk (1752-1812); Mary Ro-
bins (1743-1808), who married William Purnell
(1739-1796), a possible legislator. MARRIED by
1768 his first cousin Comfort, daughter of Thomas

Purnell (?-1769), of Wallops Neck, Worcester
County, and wife Mary Outten Selby (1702-1772).
Comfort was the granddaughter of Thomas Pur-
nell (?-1723). She was the niece of John Purnell
(?-1755). Her brothers were Thomas Purnell, of
Thomas (?-1790); John (?-1758), who married
his first cousin Zipporah (Zeporah), daughter of
John Purnell (?-1755). Her sisters were Mary,
who married Charles Rackliffe; Elizabeth, who
married first, (first name unknown) Wright, and
second, Jabez Fisher. Her first cousins were Za-
dock Purnell (?-1805); Arralantar Purnell, who
married Thomas Robins (?-1766). CHILDREN. SONS:
Thomas (?-1804), who probably never married;
Zadock; and John. DAUGHTERS: Elizabeth; Sarah,
who married (first name unknown) Marshall;
Zipporah; Esther; and Ann. PRIVATE CAREER. ED-
UCATION: literate. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVI-
TIES: Esq., by 1788. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE:
planter. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE:
Lower House, Worcester County, 1777-1778
(Manufactories 1), 1778-1779. LOCAL OFFICES:
justice, Worcester County, 1777-1790 (refused
to qualify); commissioner of the tax, Worcester
County, appointed 1777. MILITARY SERVICE: cap-
tain, by 1790. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. PER-
SONAL PROPERTY: assessed value £1,375.13.4, in-
cluding at least 27 slaves and 25 oz. plate, 1783;
31 slaves, 1790. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: at least
2,363 acres in Worcester County (775 acres in-
herited from his father; 596 acres through his mar-
riage; 839 acres through personal acquisition).

SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST

ELECTION AND DEATH: purchased at least 580 acres
in Worcester County and unknown acreage in
Sussex County, Delaware, between 1781 and 1795;
patented or resurveyed 1,695 acres in Worcester
County between 1785 and 1796; sold 348 acres in
Worcester County between 1779 and 1792.
WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: will probated on March
21, 1796, in Worcester County. PERSONAL PROP-
ERTY: TEV, £2,937.11.8 (including 37 slaves, 2
oz. old silver, and books); FB, £2,671.0.4. LAND:
at least 4,291 acres in Worcester County and land
in Sussex County, Delaware.
