Owings purchased three additional large quan-
tities of land: 551 acres and 423 acres in Anne
Arundel County, and 1,198 acres in Baltimore
County. WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: between Jan-
uary 18 and January 29, 1819, in Anne Arundel

County. PERSONAL PROPERTY: TEV, $69,139.08

as calculated (including 25 slaves, silver valued
at $52.00, books, and over $1,000.00 worth of
flour at the mills); FB, $10,468.33 as calculated.
Owing's estate was not settled until 1842. The
TEV and FB as calculated do not include money
received from the estate of his wife, Ruth, nor
legacies paid from his estate. LAND: probably ca.
3,900 acres in Anne Arundel, Baltimore, and
Frederick counties.

OWINGS (OWENS), SAMUEL (1702-1775).
BORN: on April 1, 1702, in St. Paul's Parish (later
St. Thomas Garrison Parish), Baltimore County;
fifth son. NATIVE: second generation. RESIDED:
in Baltimore County; after ca. 1730 at "Green
Spring Punch," Baltimore County. FAMILY BACK-
GROUND. FATHER: Richard Owings (?-1716), who
immigrated to Baltimore County by 1702. MOTHER:
Rachel Robert (?-1729). BROTHERS: Richard (ca.
1688-ca. 1736), who married Sarah Hart (?-1769);
Henry (ca. 1692-ca. 1764), who married in Anne
Arundel County, Helen Stinchcomb; John (ca.
1694-1765), who married first, Hannah (last name
unknown), and second, Asenath (last name un-
known); Robert (1698/99-1759), who married in
1730 in York County, Pennsylvania, Hannah Far-
quhar; and Joshua (1704- 1787), who married Mary
Cockey (?-1768). SISTER: Rachel (ca. 1683-1761),
who married John Wilmot, Jr. (?-1748). MAR-
RED on January 1, ca. 1730, Urath (ca. 1707-
1792), daughter of Thomas Randall (ca. 1684-
ca. 1722) and wife Hannah Bale (Beal, Ball) (?-
1727). Her brother was Christopher (ca. 1708-
?), who married Catherine Larkin. CHILDREN. SONS:
Bale (1731-ca. 1782); Samuel Owings, Jr. (1733-
1803); Thomas (1740-1822), who married in 1760
Ruth Lawrence; Christopher (ca. 1744-1783), who
married Elizabeth Lawrence; Richard (1746-
1747); and Richard Owings (1749-1819). DAUGH-
TERS: Rachel (1736-?), who married Henry Ste-
phenson (Stevenson) (1737-1816); Urath (1738-
?), who married Benjamin F. Lawrence; Hannah
(1743-ca. 1745); Helen (1747-1747); Hannah
(1750/51-?), who married first, William Cockey,
and second, Capt. William Stone; and Rebekah
(1755-?), who married Joshua A. Howard. PRI-
VATE CAREER. EDUCATION: literate. RELIGIOUS
AFFILIATION: Anglican. SOCIAL STATUS AND AC-

TIVITIES: Gent., by 1750; Esq., by 1763. OCCU-
PATIONAL PROFILE: planter; owned a saw mill by
death. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE:
Lower House, Baltimore County, 1757-1758,
1758-1761. LOCAL OFFICES: St. Paul's Parish Ves-
try, Baltimore County, 1735-1738, 1744-1745;
commissioner to build chapel of ease for St. Paul's
Parish (which later became St. Thomas' Parish),
appointed 1741; St. Thomas' Parish Vestry, 1750-
1752; justice, Baltimore County, 1744-1757, 1758-
1764 (quorum 1750-1757, 1758-1764); justice,
Especial Court of Oyer, Terminer, and Gaol De-
livery, Baltimore County, 1753-1761, 1763 (quo-
rum 1753-1761, 1763). WEALTH DURING LIFETIME.
LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: ca. 2,800 acres in Bal-
timore County (286 acres through marriage, 2,165
acres by patent, ca. 350 acres by purchase). SIG-
NIFICANT CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST ELEC-
TION AND DEATH: patented an additional 449 acres
in Baltimore County, 1764-1769; purchased 38
acres in Baltimore County, 1768; sold 48 acres,
1764-1769; purchased 162 acres in Frederick
County, 1770; gave 200 acres in Baltimore County
to his son Thomas, 1770. Owings made his will
in 1772, but then began distributing land by deeds
of gift to his children, not always according to the
provisions of that will. Between 1772 and 1773
he gave 250 acres to his son Samuel Owings, Jr.
(1733-1803), 223 to his daughter Hannah, 400
acres to his son Christopher, 90 acres to his son
Bale, and 257 acres to his daughter Urath, all
land in Baltimore County. WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED:
on April 6, 1775, in Baltimore County. PERSONAL
PROPERTY: TEV, at least £1,533.13.11 current
money (including 15 slaves, 1 servant, books, plate
valued at £13.8.0, millstones, and oak plank).
LAND: ca. 2,000 acres in Baltimore and Frederick
counties.

OWINGS, SAMUEL, JR. (1733-1803). BORN: on
August 17, 1733, at "Green Spring Punch", St.
Paul's Parish (later St. Thomas' Parish), Balti-
more County; second son. NATIVE: third gener-
ation. RESIDED: at his plantation, "Ulm," near
Reisterstown Road (now Owings Mills), St.
Thomas' Parish, Baltimore. FAMILY BACK-
GROUND. FATHER: Samuel Owings (1702-1775).
MOTHER: Urath Randall (ca. 1707-1792).
BROTHERS: Bale (1731-ca. 1782); Thomas (1740-
1822); Christopher (ca. 1744-1783); Richard
(1746-1747); and Richard Owings (1749-1819).
SISTERS: Rachel (1736-?); Urath (1738-?); Han-
nah (1743-ca. 1745); Helen (1747-1747); Han-
nah (1750/51-?); and Rebekah (1755-?). MAR-
