SERVICE: Lower House, St. Mary's County, 1780-
1781, 1781-1782. LOCAL OFFICES: coroner, St.
Mary's County, 1765-1791; sheriff, St. Mary's
County, 1777-1778. STANDS ON PUBLIC/PRIVATE
ISSUES: directed that half of his slaves be manu-
mitted when they reached the age of forty. WEALTH

MITCHELL, HENRY (?-1701). IMMIGRATED:
by 1658, as a free adult. RESIDED: in Calvert
County. MARRIED by 1659 Grace (1642-?),
daughter of Francis Mauldin and wife Grace (?-
1700/1); stepdaughter of both William Parker (?-
1673/74) and Edward Lloyd (ca. 1620-1696). Her
brother was Francis Mauldin (by 1653-1710/11).
Her half brother or stepbrother was William Par-
ker (?- 1679). Her stepbrother was Philemon Lloyd
(1646-1685). Her half sisters or stepsisters were
Sarah Parker, who married John Edmundson (?-
1697/98); Elizabeth Parker; Mary Parker (ca. 1632-
1699); Thomasine Parker; and Dorothy Parker.
Her nephew was Francis Mauldin (?-1734/35).
PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: probably illiterate,
but may have learned to write his name by 1693.

RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Protestant. SOCIAL STA-
TUS AND ACTIVITIES: no title on arrival; Gent.,
by 1673; Mitchell's marriage to Grace Mauldin
was against the will of her stepfather, William
Parker (?-1673/74), who brought charges of kid-
napping, which were later dismissed; charged with
hog stealing, assault, and common barratry in the
1660s, Mitchell was required to post bond in the
amount of £200.0.0 sterling for his good behavior,
1669; imprisoned for debt, 1675. OCCUPATIONAL
PROFILE: planter; merchant. PUBLIC CAREER. LEG-
ISLATIVE SERVICE: Associators' Convention, Cal-
vert County, 1689-1692; Lower House, Calvert
County, 1692-1693. LOCAL OFFICES: justice, Cal-
vert County, 1690/91-1696. MILITARY SERVICE:
captain, 1689 -1694; lieutenant colonel, 1694-1695;

colonel, 1695-1701. STANDS ON PUBLIC/PRIVATE
ISSUES, his support of the Protestant Associators'
Revolution in 1689 brought preferment, which
had been denied him earlier because of his un-
savory behavior. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND
AT FIRST ELECTION. 850 acres in Calvert and Tal-
bot counties (acquired by patent and purchase).

SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST

ELECTION AND DEATH: purchased 250 acres in

ca. 1751, probably in Worcester Parish, Worces-
ter County. NATIVE: at least second generation.
RESIDED: in Acquango Hundred, Worcester
Hundred. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER: Col.
Joshua Mitchell (?-1794) of Worcester County,
son of Robert Mitchell (?-1755) of Somerset
County and his wife Mary. MOTHER: Joyce (?-
by 1794), probably the daughter of John Pope
(?-1757) of Worcester County and his wife Ann.
UNCLE. Josiah Mitchell (?-1801). BROTHER: Rob-
ert. SISTER: Ann, who married Jesse Gray. MAR-
RIED on May 3, 1773, in St. Martin's Church,
Mary (Polly) Purnall, of Worcester Parish,
Worcester County. CHILDREN. SONS: Robert (1774-
?); Isaac; John; and Rufus. DAUGHTER: Eloise
Gatty (or Gertrude) Purnell. PRIVATE CAREER.
EDUCATION: literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION:
probably Anglican, St. Martin's Church, Worces-
ter Parish, Worcester County. SOCIAL STATUS AND
ACTIVITIES: Esq., by 1784. OCCUPATIONAL PRO-
FILE: probably planter. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGIS-
LATIVE SERVICE: Lower House, Worcester County,
1785, 1786-1787, 1787-1788. LOCAL OFFICES:
justice, Worcester County, 1777-1780, 1784-1800;
commissioner of the tax, Worcester County 1792,
1798. MILITARY SERVICE: captain, Wicomico Bat-
talion, Worcester County Militia, 1777-1779.
