BIOGRAPHIES MAU

22; St. George's Parish Vestry, Baltimore County,
in office 1721, 1725/26-1729, elected 1733, 1739.

WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST ELEC-
TION: probably 911 acres in Baltimore County
(271 acres remaining from 421 acres inherited from
his father, remainder by purchase). SIGNIFICANT

CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST ELECTION AND

DEATH: sold 200 acres, 1722; purchased 300 acres
in 1724, of which ca. 200 acres adjoined his home
plantation; resurveyed his home plantation and
adjoining lands into a 627 -acre tract for a net
gain of 186 acres, all of which he assigned im-
mediately to his son John Matthews (1714-1783),
1725-1726; purchased 454 acres, 1728-1733, and
patented 114 acres, 1728; sold these 568 acres by
1733; purchased 500 acres in 1733, and 250 acres
in 1738; patented 22 acres, 1739. All land was in
Baltimore County. WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: on
October 20, 1740, in Baltimore County. PER-
SONAL PROPERTY: TEV, £945.18.9 current money
(including 15 slaves, 2 old silver spoons, and
books); FB, £669.15.0 current money before pay-
ment of legacies. LAND: ca. 1,172 acres in Balti-
more County.

MATTHEWS (MATHEWS), WILLIAM (1755-

ca. 1808). BORN: on April 26, 1755, in St. Ste-
phen's Parish, North Sassafras Hundred, Cecil
County; probably eldest son. NATIVE: probably
third generation. RESIDED: in Sassafras Neck, Ce-
cil County; in Georgetown, Kent County, by 1797,
but appears to also have maintained a residence
in Cecil County. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER.
Hugh Matthews (?-1774), resided in Cecil County,
a physician who owned land in Cecil County and
New Castle County, Delaware; son of Hugh (ca.
1690-1757), a physician. MOTHER: Catherine,
widow of James David (Davis). BROTHERS: James
Egnatius (1760-1791), a Catholic who was killed
in a duel with Richard Heath, the eldest son of
Daniel C. Heath; Hugh (1762-1810), a lawyer
and Catholic, who was a delegate to the General
Assembly in 1797; and Arthur (?-by 1807). SIS-
TERS: Brigit (?-probably by 1772); Rebecca (1752-
1825), a Catholic; Katherine (1755-?), twin to
William, who married (first name unknown)
Knight; Susanna (?-probably by 1772); Elizabeth
(1758-?); and Sarah. HALF SISTERS: Mary David
(Davis); Rachel David (Davis). MARRIED proba-
bly never. CHILDREN. Probably died without prog-
eny; principal heirs were his sisters Rebecca and
Katherine, his brother Hugh, and several neph-
ews and nieces. PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: lit-
erate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: his birth was reg-

istered in the Anglican St. Stephen's Parish, Cecil
County, but he may have been raised Catholic.
His brothers and sisters were raised Catholic, and
his brothers received a Catholic education, OC-
CUPATIONAL PROFILE, physician; probably planter.

PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Lower

House, Cecil County, 1786-1787, 1787-1788,
1788, 1789. LOCAL OFFICES: justice, Cecil County,
1778-1792 (resigned); commissioner of the tax,
Cecil County, 1783-1785; judge, Court of Ap-
peals for Tax Assessments, Cecil County, ap-
pointed 1786; Maryland Senate elector, Cecil
County, elected 1786. our OF STATE SERVICE:
presidential elector, 1789; representative, U.S.
Congress, 1797-1799. STANDS ON PUBLIC/PRI-
VATE ISSUES: manumitted one male slave in 1795
and one female slave in 1804. WEALTH DURING

LIFETIME. PERSONAL PROPERTY: assessed Value

£2,081.0.0. including 25 slaves and 69 oz. plate,
1783. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: 790 acres in Cecil
County (205 acres managed for his minor brother,
Arthur, the remainder by purchase and probably
inheritance from father). SIGNIFICANT CHANGES

IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST ELECTION AND DEATH

purchased 923 acres in Cecil and Kent counties,
1792-1805, at least 2 lots in Warwick Town, Cecil
County, 1796, and 5 lots in Georgetown, Kent
County, date unknown. Sold 1,116 acres, 1792-
1799, including his dwelling farm of 574 acres in
1795, probably in preparation for his move to
Kent County. WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: between
December 11, 1807, and February 25, 1808, in
Cecil County; requested interment in family bur-
ying ground on Richard Davis's farm. PERSONAL
PROPERTY: TEV, at least $3,045.77 current money;
in 1845 the account of his personal property was
still pending due to irregularities in the estate.
LAND: probably ca. 600 acres in Cecil and Kent
counties; 5 lots in Georgetown, and possibly 2
lots in Warwick Town, Kent County; 2,000 acres
patented in Pennsylvania, as mentioned in his
will.

MAULDIN (MALDEN, MOLDEN), FRANCIS (?-

1734/35). BORN: in Calvert County. NATIVE: third
generation. RESIDED: in Calvert County; Cecil
County by 1708. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER:
Francis Mauldin (by 1653-1710/11) of Calvert
County, son of Francis Mauldin and wife Grace
(?-1700/1). MOTHER: probably Mary. STEP-
MOTHER: Elizabeth (?-ca. 1720). AUNT: Grace
Mauldin, who married Henry Mitchell (?-1701).
BROTHERS OR HALF BROTHERS: Thomas; William
(1689-?); and James (1695-1726). SISTERS OR
