Battalion of the Flying Camp, July-December 1776;
2nd lieutenant, 7th Regiment, Maryland Line,
May 10, 1777; 1st lieutenant, April 17, 1779; cap-
tain-lieutenant, May 22, 1779; captain, June 8,
1779; transferred to 2nd Regiment, Maryland Line,
January 1, 1781, retired January 1, 1783; major,
Caroline County Militia, 1794-1799. For his mil-
itary service Mason was granted 400 acres in Al-
legany County by the state. He received addi-
tional western lands from the national government.

MATHEWS, THOMAS (ca. 1622-1675/76). BORN:
ca. 1622, probably in England. IMMIGRATED: in
1637 as a free adult. RESIDED: in St. Mary's County;
in Charles County by 1663. MARRIED first, Hester,
who transported herself ca. 1644. MARRIED sec-
ond, Jane, daughter of John Cockshutt and wife
Jane (1612-?), stepdaughter of both Nicholas
Causine (ca. 1608-by 1658) and Robert Clarke
(ca. 1611-1664). Her half brother was Ignatius
Causine (ca. 1642-1695). Her sister was Mary,
who married Henry Adams (?-1686). Jane Cock-
shutt Matthews subsequently married John Bread.
CHILDREN. SONS: Thomas (?-1676/77), who mar-
ried Sarah, daughter of William Boreman (ca. 1630-
1709); Ignatius, who married Mary, daughter of
Joshua Doyne; and William (1674-1725).
DAUGHTERS: Anne, who married first, Thomas
Mudd, and second, Philip Hoskins (ca. 1650-1718);
Jane, who married Joshua Doyne; Victoria, who
married William Thompson; and Mary, who mar-
ried William Boreman (ca. 1630-1709). PRIVATE

ish, Spesutia Lower Hundred, Baltimore (later
became Harford) County. FAMILY BACKGROUND.
FATHER: Roger Matthews (ca. 1685-1740).
MOTHER: Mary Carvile (?-1718). STEPMOTHER:
after 1726 Elizabeth Garrett (?-ca. 1748/49).

BROTHER: Roger (1718-?). HALFBROTHERS: James

(1727-1760); Aquila (ca. 1733-1742); Levin
(1736-?); and Bennett (ca. 1739-?). SISTER:
Hannah (1711-1782), who married third, John
Hall (1701-1774). HALF SISTERS: Amelia (1729-
?); Ann (1731-?). NEPHEWS John Hall, Jr. (1737-
1770); Benedict Edward Hall (ca. 1744-1822); and
Josias Carvil Hall (1746-1814). NIECES: Martha
Hall (1735-?), who married second, John Rumsey

married Mary; Jacob, who married Betty; Zach-
ary; Draper (?-1770), of Kent County; Henry;
and Joseph (?-1764), of Baltimore County. Her
