BIOGRAPHIES MAR

Virginia shortly after Durand was exiled. Marsh
was cited by the court of Lower Norfolk County,
Virginia, for not attending the parish church and
refusing to hear common prayer. SOCIAL STATUS
AND ACTIVITIES: transported to Virginia by Thomas
Holt; called "Thomas Marsh (alias Rivers)"; Mr.,
by 1650. OCCUPATION AL PROFILE: merchant, with
vessel engaged in New England trade; planter;
physician, 1651. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE
SERVICE. Parliamentary Commission, 1655. OTHER
PROVINCIAL OFFICES: justice, Provincial Court,
1655; signer of treaty with Susquehanna Indians,
July 5, 1652. LOCAL OFFICE: justice, Anne Arun-
del County, 1650. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND
AT FIRST ELECTION: over 500 acres (had owned at
least 150 acres in Upper Norfolk, Virginia, prior
to emigration). WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: probably
in late November or December 1655, certainly
by March 20, 1656/57, when the administration
of his estate was granted to his widow, Sarah
Marsh. Marsh apparently died of wounds re-
ceived in the battle against the proprietor's forces
at Providence, Anne Arundel County, March 25,
1655.

MARSH, THOMAS (ca. 1643-1679). BORN: ca.
1643 in Virginia; only son. IMMIGRATED: in 164SY
49 as a minor with his parents. RESIDED: in Anne
Arundel County; Kent County by 1673/74. FAM-
ILY BACKGROUND. FATHER: Thomas Marsh (ca.

1615-ca. 1656). MOTHER: Sarah. SISTERS: Eliza-
beth; Margaret, who married second, William Berry
(ca. 1636-1691). MARRIED first, Margaret. MAR-
RIED second, Jane, daughter of John Clements.
CHILDREN. SON: Thomas. DAUGHTERS. Sarah
(1678-1688); Mary (1677-?). PRIVATE CAREER.
EDUCATION: literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION:
Quaker. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: second
generation provincial officeholder; Mr., by 1673;
Gent., by 1673/74; presented for bastardy, Bal-
timore County Court, 1674, with the case being
tried in the Chancery Court. OCCUPATIONAL PRO-
FILE: planter; merchant; factor to Edward May-
nard, mariner of London, 1671-1673. PUBLIC CA-
REER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Lower House, Kent
County, 1676-1678 (died before the 3rd session
of the 1676-1682 Assembly). LOCAL OFFICES, jus-
tice, Anne Arundel County, 1668 (no record of
service, probably refused oath); sheriff, Kent
County, 1676-1678. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME.

LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: at least 1,040 acres in

Anne Arundel, Kent, and Calvert counties.

WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: will probated on Octo-

ber 28, 1679, probably in Kent County. PER-

SONAL PROPERTY: TEV, 112,775 pounds of to-
bacco (including 4 servants, 2 slaves, and books),
plus sperate debts worth 41,865 pounds of to-
bacco. LAND: over 1,040 acres in Anne Arundel,
Kent, and Calvert counties.

MARSHALL, THOMAS HANSON (1731-1801)
BORN, on April 9, 1731; only son. NATIVE: fourth
generation. RESIDED: in Prince George's County
in 1759; moved shortly thereafter to "Marshall
Hall," the family home in Pickawaxan Parish,
Charles County. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER.
Thomas Marshall (1694-1759), Gent., of Charles
County, son of William Marshall (1658-1698) and
wife Elizabeth Hanson. MOTHER: Elizabeth Batie
(?-1749/50), widow of James Stoddert (ca. 1667-
1726). STEPMOTHER: Sabina Trueman (1715-
1768), daughter of Thomas Truman Greenfield
(1682-1733). She married Thomas Marshall on
August 3, 1756. STEP AUNT: Marianne Greenfield,
who married by 1728 John Stoddert (?-1767). HALF
BROTHERS. John Stoddert (?-1767), who married
Marianne Greenfield; Thomas Stoddert, who
married Janet Donaldson; William Stoddert; James
Stoddert; and Benjamin Stoddert. SISTERS: Eliz-
abeth (1727-1727); Mary (1729-1753), who mar-
ried on September 10, 1748, Zachariah Mac-
Cubbin; Elizabeth (1732-1739); and Sarah (1735-
1795), who married on February 27, 1752, John
Dent, of George (ca. 1733-1809). NEPHEW: George
Dent (ca. 1758- 1813). NIECE: Ann Herbert Dent
(1756-1813), who married William Mackall Wilk-
inson (1751-1799). MARRIED on July 16, 1756,
Rebecca (Rebekah) (ca. 1735- 1770), daughter of
George Dent (l690-1754) and wife Anne Harbert.
Rebecca was the granddaughter of both William
Dent (ca. 1660-1704) and William Harbert (?-
1718). She was the niece of Thomas Dent (1685-
1725). Her brothers were George Dent (?-1785);
John Dent, of George (ca. 1733-1809). Her sisters
were Rebecca (1714-died young); Elizabeth, who
married second, Richard Harrison (?-1780); Ann;
Sarah; Letitia (Letty); Mary; Eleanor; and Mar-
garet. Her nephews were George Dent (ca. 1758-
1813); William Harrison (?-1789). Her nieces were
Ann Dent, who married John Parnham (ca. 1748-
1813); Ann Herbert Dent (1756-1813), who
married William Mackall Wilkinson (1751-1799).
CHILDREN. SONS: Dr. Thomas (1757-1829), who
was blinded in the Revolutionary War, and who
married first, Ann Clagett, and second, Margaret
Marshall; George Dent (1763-1764); and George
Hanson (1770-1775). DAUGHTERS: Ann (1759-
1789), who married Dr. Benjamin Fendall; Eliz-
