1833) near Frederick Town; buried in All Saints'
Parish Cemetery, Frederick Town. LAND: at least
22,824 acres in Frederick and Allegany counties,
plus one-half undivided interest in 1,300 acres in
Loudon County, Virginia.

by 1682, Mary, widow of William Brockhurst.

ICE: Lower House, Cecil County, 1686-1688; As-
sociators' Convention, 1689-1692; Grand Com-
mittee of Twenty, 1690-1692; Lower House, Cecil

justice, Provincial Court, 1694-1697. LOCAL OF-
FICES: deputy surveyor, Cecil County, 1678; jus-

and turbulent spirit" brought his dismissal from

generation. RESIDED, probably on ''Jones' Choice"
on the north side of Little Mony Creek, Somerset

County. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER: William

Jones (?-ca. 1690) of Monie, who immigrated in
1665, in the Manokin section of Somerset County
in June 1666, a planter; justice of Somerset County.
1676-1687. MOTHER: Margaret (?-1683), who
immigrated with her husband in 1665. STEP-
MOTHER: by 1689 Jane. She married second,
George Bozman, and third, Luke Valentine (?-
1713). BROTHERS: William (1666-1722), who
married Catherine (last name unknown); Daniel
(1680-1720), who married Susannah Covington;
George (1678-1702); and Robert (1681-1723),

?

who married Sarah (last name unknown). SIS-
TERS: Margaret (1671-?); Elizabeth; Mary (1670-
1677); and Ann (1675-?). MARRIED Elizabeth (?-
1754), daughter of Robert Collier (?-ca. 1702)
and wife Elizabeth Dashiell (ca. 1655-1723). Her

Leonard Jones, Jr.; Sarah; Jeane (Jane) (?-ca.
1726), who married Richard Phillips (?-ca. 1727);

(last name unknown). DAUGHTERS: Margaret, who
married Charles Ballard, son of Charles Ballard

erset County appointed under the Act for Ad-
vancement of Trade and Erecting Ports and Towns
in the Province of Maryland, April 1706; justice,
Somerset County, in office 1715/16-1731 (quo-
rum 1725-1731). MILITARY SERVICE: captain, ca.

1720. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST

ELECTION: 350 acres in Somerset County (inher-
ited from his father). SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN

LAND BETWEEN FIRST ELECTION AND DEATH:

bought 120 acres in Somerset County, 1716; pat-
ented 50 acres in Somerset County with Thomas
Dashiell, 1725. WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: in 1731,
inventory made December 15, 1731, in Somerset

County. PERSONAL PROPERTY: TEV, £371.19.9

(including 6 slaves, plated valued at £4.5.0, and
a "sloop and her appurtenances"); FB, £336.0.3.
LAND: 520 acres in Somerset County. IDENTIFI-
CATION PROBLEMS. There were four men named
John Jones alive in Somerset County during this
time period. However, only John Jones, son of
William Jones (?-ca. 1690) of Monie, was found
to have the qualifications necessary to serve from
Somerset in 1704 and again in 1719.

JONES, JOHN COURTS (1754-1802). BORN: on
September 11, 1754, in Prince George's Parish,
Prince George's County. NATIVE, at least fourth
generation. RESIDED: at "Cedar Point," Nanje-
moy Parish, Charles County. There is some evi-
dence of a short residency in Lower Potomac
Hundred, Frederick County, in 1776. FAMILY
