Baltimore County, 1680-1690/91 (quorum, 1680-
1690/91). MILITARY SERVICE: captain, by 1684-

1690/91. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST

ELECTION: at least 640 acres in Baltimore County
of his own, plus probably control of the Utie es-
tate. WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: on January 18, 1690/
91; estate probated in Baltimore County. PER-
SONAL PROPERTY: TEV, £497.2.11 (including 3
slaves, 4 servants, 80 oz. plate, and books); FB,
£86.3.8. LAND: at least 740 acres in Baltimore
County.

JOHNSON, JAMES (?-?). IMMIGRATED: proba-
bly in 1640 as a free adult. RESIDED: in Poplar
Hill Hundred, St. Mary's County. MARRIED by
1650 Barbara, daughter of Richard Hatton, step-
daughter of Richard Banks (ca. 1612-ca. 1667).
Her brothers were William Hatton (?-1712);
Richard, who married Ann (1659-?), daughter
of John Price (1607-1660/61). Her sisters were
Elinor (1642-1725), who married first, Thomas
Brooke (1632-1676), and second, Henry Darnall
(ca. 1645-1711); Mary, who married ZacharyWade
(ca. 1627-1678); and Elizabeth, who married first,
Luke Gardiner (1622-1674), and second, Clement
Hill (?-1708). PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: lit-
erate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Protestant. SO-
CIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: Mr., by 1655. OC-
CUPATIONAL PROFILE: planter. PUBLIC CAREER.
LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Assembly, present 1641/
42, Potomac (St. Mary's County), 1657. LOCAL
OFFICES: justice, Potomac (St. Mary's County),
1655 (quorum, 1655); possibly deputy sheriff, St.
Mary's County, 1676. STANDS ON PUBLIC/PRIVATE
ISSUES: called Richard Bennett (ca. 1608-1675) a
rogue and expressed support for Edward Hill (?-
1663) in the struggle for control of Maryland's
government, 1647. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME.
LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: probably 700 acres.
WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: will was written in 1650,
but still alive in 1658; date of death is not known.
LAND: probably 700 acres.

JOHNSON, JOSIAH (?-1804). IMMIGRATED/NA-
TIVE: unknown; a Josiah Johnson was teaching at
William and Mary College, Williamsburg, Vir-
ginia, on August 15, 1771. RESIDED: in Kent County
by 1776. MARRIED Araminta (1765-by 1798),
daughter of Isaac Perkins (1743-1791) and wife
Ann (possibly Wallis). Araminta was the step-
daughter of Hannah Wallis (1741/42-?), who was
probably her mother's sister. She was probably
the granddaughter of Hugh Wallis (1711-1766).
Her brother was Ebenezer (1767-?). Her sisters

or half sisters were Ann (?-ca. 1797), who mar-
ried by 1791 George Jackson (1758-1798); Sarah,
who married by 1798 James Groome. CHILDREN.
DAUGHTERS: Araminta Perkins (ca. 1792-?);
Elizabeth Ann Wallis (ca. 1793-?). PRIVATE CA-
REER. EDUCATION: literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIA-
TION: Anglican, Shrewsbury Parish, Kent County.

SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: Mr., by 1792. OC-
CUPATIONAL PROFILE: planter in 1788. PUBLIC CA-
REER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Lower House, Kent
County, 1786-1787 (Claims 1), 1787-1788
(elected, but did not attend). LOCAL OFFICES:
commissary for provisions, Kent County, April
20, 1780: sheriff, Kent County (defeated in the
election of November 1789, but commissioned
when Edward Worrell, the winner, died). MILI-
TARY SERVICE: ensign in a Kent County Company
belonging to the Eastern Shore Battalion of Mi-
litia for the Flying Camp, July 9, 1776; enlisted
in the Fifth Regiment as a captain, December 10,
1776; discharged November 1, 1778, with invalid

StatUS. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. PERSONAL

PROPERTY: assessed value £87.0.0, including 3
slaves, 1783; 4 slaves, 1790. LAND AT FIRST ELEC-
TION: 190 acres in Kent County (purchased as
confiscated British property in 1782). SIGNIFI-
CANT CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST ELEC-
TION AND DEATH: patented the 190-acre tract of
confiscated British property in 1795; by 1788 he
owned 26 additional acres, which he sold in 1791.
WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: administration bond ex-
ecuted in Kent County on July 21, 1804. PER-
SONAL PROPERTY. TEV, at least $117.20 current
money; personal property was sold at public auc-
tion for $175.49. LAND: 190 acres in Kent County.

JOHNSON, RINALDO (ca. 1755-1811). BORN:
ca. 1755, probably at "Pleasant Green," Balti-
more County. NATIVE: third generation. RE-
SIDED: in Prince George's County by 1755; at
"Brook Court" on the Patuxent River, four miles
from Lower Marlborough, Prince Frederick
Hundred, Prince George's County, 1789. FAMILY
BACKGROUND. FATHER: Thomas Johnson (ca. 1706-
1791) of Baltimore County. MOTHER: Ann (1736-
1802), daughter of Edward Riston (Reaston,
Reeceston). BROTHERS: Horatio (ca. 1757-1804),
of "Chantilly," Elk Ridge, Anne Arundel County,
a tobacco inspector at Elk Ridge Landing, who
married first, Sarah Norwood, and second, Eliz-
abeth Warfield (?-1820); Thomas (ca. 1764-1831)
of Baltimore County, a physician who married
Anne (Johannah) Giles; William (?-ca. 1798) of
Baltimore County; Cecilius (Caecilius) (ca. 1771-
