VICE: captain, by 1751; colonel, by 1772; brigadier
general, militia, lower Eastern Shore district,

1776-1783. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. PER-
SONAL PROPERTY: £720.3.2 current money, and
4,542 pounds of tobacco, a legacy from his father's
estate, 1771; 59 slaves, 1776; assessed value
£2,510.5.0, including 48 slaves and 189 oz. plate,
1783. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: approximately
5,990 acres in Dorchester County (at least 1,946
acres from his father; approximately 2,532 acres
through his marriage, of which 600 acres were
sold before his first election; at least 1,611 acres by
purchase and /or patent). SIGNIFICANT CHANGES

Dorchester County. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FA-
THER: Henry Hooper, Jr. (ca. 1727-1790), son of
Henry Hooper (ca. 1687-1767). MOTHER Ann (ca.
1729-by 1790), daughter of William Ennalls (?-
1731). AUNT: Mary Ennalls, who married Ennalls
Hooper (?-ca. 1763). BROTHERS: Henry, Jr.; Maj.
John (?-ca. 1798). SISTERS: Mary; Sarah (Sally);
and Anne Elizabeth. FIRST COUSIN: Mary Hicks
(ca. 1745-1779), who married Zachariah Campbell
(?-1777). MARRIED by 1783 Sarah (?-1798),
daughter of (first name unknown) Ridgway, of
Talbot County, and wife Mabel Sherwood (?-
1796); stepdaughter of both Risdon Bozman (?-
1774) and Charles Da/fin (?-1794); granddaughter
of Phillip Sherwood (?-ca. 1789), of Talbot
County. Her brother was William. CHILDREN. SON:
Henry. DAUGHTERS: Anne, who married Joseph
Sullivane; Sally Ennalls, "Maid of the Oaks," who
married in 1811 John W. Henry. Hooper was also
the guardian for the children of Zachariah Camp-
bell (?-1777), ca. 1783. PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCA-
TION: literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Anglican,
Great Choptank Parish, Dorchester County. SO-
CIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES Gent., by 1788;

fourth generation legislator. OCCUPATIONAL PRO-
FILE physician, by 1781. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGIS-
LATIVE SERVICE: Lower House, Dorchester
County, 1785, 1786-1787. LOCAL OFFICES: com-

missary for horses, Dorchester County, appointed
1781; justice, Dorchester County, appointed 1791.
MILITARY SERVICE: captain, Light Dragoons,
Maryland Militia, by 1794. WEALTH DURING

LIFETIME. PERSONAL PROPERTY: assessed value
£672.16.8, including 14 slaves and 20 oz. plate,
1783; controlled 18 slaves for the heirs of Za-
chariah Campbell (?-1777), 1783. LAND AT FIRST
ELECTION: 157 acres in Talbot County (all through
his marriage), plus control of 585 acres in Dor-
chester County for the heirs of Zachariah Camp-
bell (?-1777). SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN LAND
BETWEEN FIRST ELECTION AND DEATH: probably

inherited approximately 1,200 acres in Dorchester
County from his father in 1790, although some of
this may have been bequeathed to his sisters; sold
157 acres in Talbot County, 1790; purchased and
resurveyed 334 acres in Dorchester County, 1791.
WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: buried on July 24,
1795, in Great Choptank Parish, Dorchester
County. PERSONAL PROPERTY: size of estate un-
known. LAND: possibly as much as 1,500 acres in
Dorchester County.

HOPEWELL, JAMES (?-1817). BORN: after
1756 in St. Mary's County. NATIVE: at least fourth
generation. RESIDED: in Harvey Hundred, St.
Mary's County. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER:
Hugh Hopewell (?-1777). MOTHER: Elizabeth (?-
1787). BROTHERS: Hugh (?-1785), eldest son;
Thomas (?-1781); and Pollard (?-1796), who mar-
ried in 1785 Catherine Gaither. SISTERS: Elizabeth,
who married (first name unknown) Emery; Ann,
who married by 1779 (first name unknown) Hebb.
OTHER KINSHIP: his great-grandfather was Rich-
ard Hopewell (?-ca. 1745); his great-aunt was Ann
Hopewell, who married Thomas Aisquith (?-1761).
MARRIED in 1798 probably Angelina (Ann),
daughter of Robert Chesley and wife Mareia, of
St. Mary's County. CHILDREN. SON: James Robert.
DAUGHTERS: Ann Mareia, who married in 1815
George W. Biscoe; Olivia Caroline; and Henrietta
Rebecca. PRIVATE CAREER. RELIGIOUS AFFILIA-
TION: Anglican, St. Andrew's Parish, St. Mary's
County. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: probably a
planter. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE:
