attend), 2nd, 1774, 4th, 1775, 5th, 1775, 6th-8th,
1775-1776 (Claims 6th; Claims 7th; Claims 8th),
9th, 1776 (Claims). LOCAL OFFICE: deputy sur-
veyor, Charles County, appointed 1766; Commit-
tee of Observation, Charles County, elected 1774.
MILITARY SERVICE, lieutenant colonel, Twelfth
Battalion, 1776; colonel, by 1781. WEALTH DUR-
ING LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: ca. 556

acres in Charles County. WEALTH AT DEATH.
DIED: on March 16, 1809, in Alexandria, Virginia;
size of estate unknown.

HOOPER, ENNALLS (?-ca. 1763). BORN: prob-
ably of age by 1735. RESIDED: in Dorchester
County; Virginia, 1753; apparently returned to
Dorchester County sometime in the 1750s. MAR-
RIED by 1739 Mary, daughter of William Ennalls
(?-1731); ward and niece of Maj. Joseph Ennalls
(1702-1759); granddaughter of Joseph Ennalls (?-
1709); niece of Bartholomew Ennalls (ca. 1700-
1783), Elizabeth Ennalls (?-by 1739), who married
Charles Goldsborough (1707-1767), and Mary En-
nalls, who married Henry Hooper (ca. 1687-1767).
Her sisters were Anne (ca. 1729-by 1790), who
married Henry Hooper, Jr. (ca. 1727-1790); Betty.
Her first cousins were Joseph Ennalls (ca. 1745-
1779); William Ennalls (?-1785); John Ennalls
(by 1746-ca. 1778); Henry Hooper, Jr. (ca. 1727-
1790); Robert Goldsborough (1733-1788); Elinor
Ennalls (ca. 1738-1793), who married Joseph Daf-
fin (?-1796); and Elizabeth Greenbery Golds-
borough (ca. 1731-1820), who married William
Ennalls (?-1785). Her nephew was William En-
nalls Hooper (?-1795). CHILDREN. SONS: Henry (?-
1771); James. DAUGHTERS: Ann; Mary. PRIVATE

CAREER. EDUCATION: literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIA-
TION: Anglican, Cambridge Church, Dorchester
County. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: Gent.,
by 1744. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: probably a
planter. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE:
Lower House, Dorchester County, 1751-1752 (re-
signed and left the province before the 3rd ses-
sion). LOCAL OFFICES: deputy commissary, Dor-
chester County, in office 1744-1748, 1750-1751;
sheriff, Dorchester County, 1746-1749; justice,
Dorchester County, 1749-at least 1751. MILITARY
SERVICE: major, by 1746; colonel, by 1751.

WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. PERSONAL PROP-
ERTY: sold 28 slaves, livestock, and all of his im-
plements of household and husbandry, and other
personalty to Henry Hooper, Jr. (ca. 1727-1790)
and Joseph Ennalls in 1752. They were to dispose

of this property to pay the debts Ennalls Hooper
owed to various people amounting to £1,062.16.3
current money, plus 70,800 pounds of tobacco. He
sold 3 additional slaves and his interest in a
church pew, between 1755 and 1757. LAND AT
FIRST ELECTION: at least 2,576 acres in Dorchester
County (3,660 acres through his marriage, of
which 1,184 acres were sold before his first elec-
tion; 100 acres by patent). SIGNIFICANT CHANGES

IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST ELECTION AND DEATH:

sold 2,129 acres in Dorchester County between
1753 and 1758; his wife sold 245 acres in Dorches-
ter County, 1762. By 1752, when he gave power of
attorney to Henry Hooper, Jr. (ca. 1727-1790) and
Joseph Ennalls to schedule payment of his debts,
he was in financial difficulties. WEALTH AT
DEATH. DIED: by June 1763, possibly in Dorches-
ter County, probably insolvent. PERSONAL PROP-
ERTY: administration bond was in the amount of
£500.0.0 sterling. LAND 202 acres in Dorchester
County, all of which he had leased out for his life-
time.

HOOPER, HENRY (ca. 1643-1720). BORN: ca.
1643, probably in England; probably oldest son.
IMMIGRATED: in 1651 as a minor with his parents
and three siblings. RESIDED: in Calvert County;
Dorchester County, by 1667. FAMILY BACK-
GROUND. FATHER: Henry Hooper (?-ca. 1676),
who was illiterate, accorded the title Mr. on ar-
rival and who served as a justice of Calvert
County from 1658 to 1661, and was a captain in
1658. MOTHER: Sarah. BROTHERS: Richard (?-
1673); Robert. SISTERS. Elizabeth; Sarah. MARRIED
first, in 1669 Elizabeth, daughter of Levin Den-
wood (ca. 1602-after 1663). Her brothers were
Thomas; Luke; and Levin. Her sisters were Sarah,
who married Thomas Hicks (1659-1722); Mary,
who married Roger Woolford (?-ca. 1701/2);
Susanna; and Rebecca. MARRIED second, Mary,
daughter of Roger Woolford (?-ca. 1701/2). Her
brother was Roger Woolford (1670-1730). Her
sisters were Sarah (1672-by 1730), who married
Covert Lookerman (ca. 1681-1728); Elizabeth
(1664/65-1739), who married first, Thomas En-
nalls(?-1718), and second, William Holland (?-
1732). CHILDREN. SONS. Richard, who married
Anne, daughter of William Dorrington; John (?-
1754); Roger, who married (first name unknown)
Hicks; Henry Hooper (ca. 1687-1767), who mar-
ried Mary, daughter of Joseph Ennalls (?-1709);
Thomas; and James (1703-1789). DAUGHTERS:
Mary (1674-1745), who married Henry Ennalls
(1675-1734); Priscilla, who married John Stevens;
Elizabeth, who married Matthew Travers (ca.
