Barnes (?-ca. 1778). CHILDREN. SONS: James Holly-
day (1722-1786); Henry Hollyday (ca. 1725-1789).
STEPSONS: Philemon Lloyd (1709-1729); Edward
Lloyd (1711-1770); James Lloyd (1715-1738); and
Richard Lloyd (1717-1786). DAUGHTER: Sarah
(1727-1729), who died by accidental drowning.
STEPDAUGHTER: Rebecca Lloyd (1713-ca. 1776),
who married William Anderson, of London, En-
gland, a merchant. PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION:

literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Anglican, St.
Luke's Parish, Queen Anne's County; his wife was
a Quaker. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: Esq.,
1738. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: probably a
planter; officeholder. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLA-
TIVE SERVICE: Lower House, Talbot County,
1725-1727 (Accounts 1-3; Laws 3, 4), 1728-1731
(Accounts 1-5; Elections 1-5); Upper House,
1735/36-1737 (appointed before the convention;
did not attend until the 3rd session), 1738, 1739-
1741, 1742-1744, 1745, 1745/46-1747 (died be-
fore the 2nd convention). ADDITIONAL COM-
MENTS: in 1726 Charles Carroll, Sr. (1702-1782)
challenged Hollyday to a duel, which he accepted.
Their dispute was over legislation concerning con-
trol of the planting, quantity, and quality of to-
bacco. The Lower House intervened, prevented
the duel, and censured them both. OTHER PROVIN-
CIAL OFFICES: treasurer, Eastern Shore, 1727-
1747; justice, Provincial Court, 1732-at least 1735
(quorum, 1732-at least 1735); justice, Court of
Assize, Eastern Shore, 1732-at least 1734; Coun-
cil, 1735-1747 (appointed on July 15, 1735, but
did not qualify until February 17, 1736/37, having
been in Europe since his nomination); naval offi-
cer, Oxford, 1737-1747. LOCAL OFFICES: visitor,
Talbot County School, in office 1727; justice, Tal-
bot County, 1727-at least 1732 (quorum, 1732);
justice, Court of Oyer and Terminer and Gaol De-
livery, Talbot County, appointed 1728; St. Luke's
Parish Vestry, Queen Anne's County, elected
1734. MILITARY SERVICE: called "colonel," but no
evidence of military service found. WEALTH DUR-

ING LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: 800

acres in Prince George's and Talbot counties (700
acres inherited from his father; 100 acres acquired
through his marriage), also controlled 6,163 acres
in Talbot and Queen Anne's counties for the heirs
of Edward Lloyd (1670-1718/19). SIGNIFICANT

CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST ELECTION

AND DEATH: resurveyed the 700 acres he owned at
first election in Prince George's County into a
1,069-acre tract, 1729; patented 1,440 acres in
Queen Anne's County, 1733; purchased 200 acres
in Queen Anne's County between 1734 and 1737.
WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: on October 8, 1747, in

Queen Anne's County. PERSONAL PROPERTY: re-
quested no appraisal of his estate. LAND: 2,809
acres in Prince George's, Talbot, and Queen An-
ne's counties.

HOLLYDAY (HOLLIDAY), JAMES (1722-
1786). BORN: on October 30, 1722, at "Wye
House," Talbot County; elder son. NATIVE: third
generation. RESIDED: in Queen Anne's County;
London, England, 1754-1758; "Readbourne,"
Queen Anne's County, 1758 to death. FAMILY
BACKGROUND. FATHER James Hollyday (1696-
1747), son of Thomas Hollyday (ca. 1661-1702/3).
MOTHER: Sarah Covington (1683-1765), widow of
Edward Lloyd (1670-1718/19); daughter of Nehe-
miah Covington (?-ca. 1713), of Somerset County,
and wife Rebecca Denwood. AUNTS: Margery Hol-
lyday Covington (?-1764), who married second,
Thomas Gantt (?-1765); Elizabeth Covington, who
married Benjamin Wailes (?-ca. 1729); and Pris-
cilla Covington, who married Robert King (1689-
1755). BROTHER: Henry Hollyday (ca. 1725-1789).
HALF BROTHERS: Philemon Lloyd (1709-1729);
Edward Lloyd (1711-1770); James Lloyd (1715-
1738); and Richard Lloyd (1717-1786). SISTER:
Sarah (1727-1729). HALF SISTER: Rebecca Lloyd
(1713-ca. 1776). FIRST COUSINS: Mary King
(1715-1739), who married Abraham Barnes (?-ca.
1778); Elizabeth Hollyday, who married Francis
Lee (?-1749); and Mary Hollyday, who married
Francis Waring (1715-1769). NEPHEW: James Hol-
lyday( 1758- 1807). NIECES: Henrietta Maria Hol-
lyday (1750-1832), who married Samuel Chamber-
laine (1742-1811); Anna Maria Hollyday (1756-
1817), who married George Gale (1756-1815); and
Rebecca Hollyday (1762-1801), who married
Nicholas Hammond (1758-1830). MARRIED never.
CHILDREN. Died without progeny. PRIVATE CA.
REER. EDUCATION: almost certainly trained under
Joshua George (ca. 1695-1748) as a lawyer; admit-
ted to the Middle Temple in December 1754 and
returned to Maryland in 1758. RELIGIOUS AFFILI-
ATION: Anglican. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE law-
yer, admitted to the following courts: Baltimore
County in June 1744; Queen Anne's County in
November 1748; Kent County by March 1749/50;
