FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER: possibly James

Hay, who was in Maryland in 1670. MARRIED by
1707, probably by 1702, Mary (1678-?), daughter
of Kenelm Cheseldyne (1640-1708). She subse-
quently married by 1717/18 George Fobes. Her
brother was Kenelm Cheseldyne (1683-1719). Her
sisters were Susannah (1680-1730), who married
Thomas Trueman Greenfield (1682- 1733); Dryden
(1687-1760), who married first, Henry Peregrine
Jowles (1681-1720), and second, John Fobes.
CHILDREN. SON. probably James. DAUGHTER:
Mary (by 1708-?). PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION:
literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Protestant. SO-
CIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: Gent., by 1705;
probably had married the daughter of Kenelm
Cheseldyne (1640-1708) by 1702 when he was ap-
pointed Sheriff. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE
SERVICE: Lower House, St. Mary's City, 1704-
1707 (Elections and Privileges 4). LOCAL OFFICE:
sheriff, St. Mary's County, 1702-1704. WEALTH
AT DEATH. DIED: by 1717/18. LAND: ca. 400 acres.

HAYWARD, WILLIAM (?-1791). BORN: of age
by 1756. NATIVE: at least second generation. RE-
SIDED: in Somerset County; "Locust Grove," Bay-
ley's Neck, Talbot County, 1767; "Marshy Point,"
Talbot County, 1789. FAMILY BACKGROUND.
BROTHER: George Hayward (?-1773). NEPHEW:
William Hayward, Jr. (ca. 1758-1834). MARRIED
in November 1760 Margaret (1734-1808), daugh-
ter of George Robins (1697- 1742); stepdaughter of
William Goldsborough (1709-1760); granddaugh-
ter of both Thomas Robins (1672- 1721) and Rich-
ard Tilghman (1672/73-1738/39); niece of Wil-
liam Tilghman (1711-1782), Edward Tilghman
(1713-1786), James Tilghman (1716-1793), Mat-
thew Tilghman (1717/18-1790), Mary Tilghman
(1702-ca. 1736), who married James Earle, Jr. (ca.
1694-1739), and Anna Maria Tilghman (1709-
1763), who married first, William Hemsley (1103-
1736), and second, Robert Lloyd (ca. 1712-1770);
stepniece of Elizabeth Robins (1710-1746), who
married William Goldsborough (1709-1760). Her
brother was Thomas (1740-1762). Her sisters were
Anna Maria (1732-1806), who married Henry
Hollyday(ca. 1725-1789); Henrietta Maria (1736-
1791), who married James Lloyd Chamberlaine
(1732-1783); Susannah (1738-?); and Elizabeth
(1742-by 1764). Her first cousins were Michael
Earle (1722-1787); Richard Tilghman Earle
(1728/29-1788); William Hemsley (1736/37-
1812); Richard Tilghman (1740-1809); Matthew
Tilghman (1760-ca. 1801); James Tilghman
(1743-1809); Peregrine Tilghman (ca. 1741-1807);
James Tilghman, Jr. (ca. 1748-1796); William

Tilghman (1756-1827); Anna Maria Earle (1725-
1795), who married Thomas Ringgold (1715-
1772); Henrietta Maria Earle (1730-1767), who
married William Hemsley (1736/37-1812); Debo-
rah Lloyd, who married Peregrine Tilghman (ca.
1741-1807); Margaret Tilghman (1742-1817),
who married Charles Carroll, Barrister (1723-
1783); Anna Maria Tilghman (?-1817), who mar-
ried William Hemsley (1736/37-1812); and
Elizabeth Tilghman, who married James Lloyd
(1745-1820). Her nephew was James Hollyday
(1758-1807). Her nieces were Henrietta Maria
Hollyday (1750-1832), who married Samuel
Chamberlaine (1742-1811); Anna Maria Hollyday
(1756-1817), who married George Gale (1756-
1815); Rebecca (1762-1801), who married Nicho-
las Hammond (1758-1 830); and Henrietta Maria
Chamberlaine (?-1804), who married William
Hayward, Jr. (ca. 1758-1834). Her other relatives
included her great-grandfather Philemon Lloyd

Kent County; Thomas (1771-?), who married
first, in 1795 Mary, daughter of Thomas Smyth
and wife Margaret, and second, Mary, widow of
