HAR BIOGRAPHIES

Walter Hanson (1711/12-1794). Her first cousins
were Samuel Hanson (1716-1794); John Hanson,
Jr. (1721-1783); Charity Hanson (1724-?), who
married second, Arthur Lee (?-1760); and Walter
Hanson (1711/12-1794). MARRIED second,
Elizabeth (?-1781), widow of William Penn;
daughter of George Dent (1690-1754); grandaugh-
ter of both William Dent (ca. 1660-1704) and Wil-
liam Harbert (?-1718); niece of Thomas Dent
(1685-1725). Her brothers were George Dent (?-
1785); John Dent, of George (ca. 1733-1809). Her
sisters were Ann; Sarah; Rebecca (1714-died
young); Letty; Mary; Eleanor; Margaret; and
Rebecca (1735-1770), who married Thomas Han-
son Marshall (1731-1801). Her nephew was
George Dent (ca. 1758-1813). CHILDREN. SONS:
Robert Hanson, who married Grace, daughter of
William Dent (?-1756/57); William Harrison (?-
1789); and Walter Hanson, rector of Durham Par-
ish, Charles County. STEPSONS: Jezreal Penn; Wil-
liam Penn. PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: literate.

RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Protestant. SOCIAL STA-
TUS AND ACTIVITIES: Gent., 1744; Esq., 1754.
OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: probably a planter. PUB-
LIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE Lower House,
Charles County, 1742-1744, 1745, 1745/46-1748,
1751-1754 (Bills of Credit 1-6). LOCAL OFFICES.
justice, Charles County, 1741 -at least 1769 (quo-
rum, 1755-at least 1769). MILITARY SERVICE: cap-
tain, 1747; colonel, 1754. WEALTH DURING LIFE-
TIME. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: 1,127 acres in
Charles County (700 acres inherited from his fa-
ther in 1727, 150 acres by personal acquisition,
277 acres from his first wife's dower). SIGNIFI-
CANT CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST ELEC-
TION AND DEATH: acquired 1,534 acres in Charles
County, 1747-1773. WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED:
will probated on September 16, 1780, in Charles
County. LAND: at least 2,661 acres in Charles
County.

HARRISON, ROBERT (1740-1802). BORN, on
November 5, 1740, in Appleby, Westmoreland
County, England; eldest son. IMMIGRATED: in
March 1755 from England. RESIDED: at "Ap-
pleby," near Cambridge, Dorchester County. FAM-
ILY BACKGROUND. FATHER: Christopher (1717-
1799), of Appleby, Westmoreland County, En-
gland, a grocer. MOTHER: Mary (1716-1782),
daughter of John Caile (?-1747), of England, and
wife Margaret. BROTHERS: John Caile (1747-
1780), who married in 1773 his first cousin Mary
Caile, daughter of Hall Caile and wife Elizabeth
Haskim; Christopher (1749-1752); Thomas
(1751-1830), who married Margaret Birbeck (ca.

1754-1833); and William (1753-1835). SISTERS.
Sarah (1743-1745); Margaret (1745-1785), who
married Gilpin Gorst (1726-1803), son of William
Gorst, steward of Appleby Castle; Jane (1755-
1755); and Mary (1758-1759). MARRIED on Octo-
ber 10, 1770, Milcah (1751-1780), daughter of
George Gale (ca. 1731-1765) and wife Elizabeth
Airey (?-1799); granddaughter of both John Gale
(?-ca. 1744) and Rev. Thomas Airey and wife
Elizabeth Pitt; niece of Mary Gale (ca. 1734-by
1790), who married Samuel Wilson (1735-1790);
half niece of Milcah Airey, who married Thomas
Firmin Eccleston (ca. 1738-1785). Her brothers
were John Gale (1753-1813); George (1756-?).
Her sisters were Mary (1759-1760); Elizabeth (ca.
1762-?); and Leah. CHILDREN. SONS: Christopher
(1775-1862), first lieutenant governor of Indiana
from 1816 to 1818, helped layout the city of Indi-
anapolis, Indiana, never married; John Gale
(1779-1802), never married. DAUGHTERS: Mary
(1774-1840), who married in 1802 Jacob Loocker-
man (1759-1839), son of John Loockerman, Jr.,
and stepson of John Goldsborough (1711-1778);
Elizabeth (1777-1857), who married in 1803 An-
drew Skinner. PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: liter-
ate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Anglican, Great
Choptank Church, Cambridge, Dorchester
County. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: one of
the trustees for building a ballroom in Cambridge,
Dorchester County, for the use of those people
who had subscribed money toward its construc-
tion, 1770. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: merchant,
Cambridge, Dorchester County, by 1764; owned a
brick storehouse on High Street, Cambridge, Dor-
chester County, 1785; planter, by 1793. PUBLIC
CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Conventions, Dor-
chester County, 1st, 1774, 5th, 1775. OTHER
STATE OFFICE: associate justice, Fourth Judicial
District, 1791-1794 (resigned). LOCAL OFFICES:
sheriff, Dorchester County, 1767-1770; justice,
Dorchester County, 1777-at least 1785; justice,
Orphans' Court, Dorchester County, commis-
sioned 1777 and 1778 (did not qualify); subscrip-
tion officer, Continental Loan Office, Dorchester
County, appointed 1777 and 1779; commissioner
of tax, Dorchester County, 1779— at least 1792;
Maryland Senate elector, Dorchester County,
elected 1791. ADDITIONAL COMMENTS. Harrison
arrived in Maryland in 1755 with letters of intro-
duction to Governor Sharpe recommending that
he be appointed to an office "on account of his
alliance." No office was found for him until he
was appointed sheriff of Dorchester County in
1767. MILITARY SERVICE: 1st major, Lower Bat-
