Arundel County, commissioned 1715, 1716, 1717,
1718, 1720, 1731, and 1734; justice, Anne Arundel
County, 1716-at least 1731 (quorum, 1727-at
least 1731). MILITARY SERVICE: colonel, by 1767.

WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST
ELECTION: 1,732 acres in Anne Arundel County
(ca. 845 acres through his marriage, ca. 282 acres
inherited from his parents). SIGNIFICANT

CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST ELECTION

AND DEATH: purchased or patented an additional
1,237 acres in Anne Arundel County, but sold or
assigned 1,073 acres; gave 1,150 acres to his
daughter and grandchildren by deed of gift in
1744, retaining a life interest in the estate. WEALTH
AT DEATH. DIED: on September 13, 1772, at his
home in St. Margaret's Parish, Anne Arundel

1643, probably on Isle of Wight, England; proba-
bly second son. IMMIGRATED, ca. 1655 as a minor
with his father and brother. RESIDED: in Anne
Arundel County. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER:
Thomas Hammond, a colonel in the Parliamentary
army. BROTHER: Thomas Hammond. MARRIED
first, Mary (?-by 1678), daughter of Matthew
Howard and wife Ann. Her brothers were Cornel-
ius Howard (?-1680), Matthew (ca. 1640-
1692/93), who married Sarah Dorsey; Samuel;
John; and Philip, who married Ruth Baldwin. Her
sisters were Elizabeth, who married Henry Ridge-
ley (?-1710); Anne. Her nephew was Matthew
Howard (ca. 1675-1750). Her nieces were Sarah
Howard, who married first, John Worthington
(1650-1701), and second, John Brice (?-1713);
Hannah Howard, who married first, Charles Ham-
mond (ca.. 1670-1713), and second, Edmond Ben-
son (1687-1734). MARRIED second, by November
1678 Mary, widow of (first name unknown)
Roper. CHILDREN. SONS: Thomas Hammond (?-ca.
1724/25), who married first, Rebecca Larkin
Lightfoot, and second, Mary Heath; John Ham-
mond (ca. 1665-1742/43), who married Ann,
daughter of Nicholas Greenberry (1627-1697);
William (?-1711/12), who married Elizabeth
Cockey; and Charles Hammond (ca. 1670-1713).
DAUGHTERS: Mary, who married Cornelius How-
ard (ca. 1670-1717), son of Cornelius Howard (1-
1680); Elizabeth, who married first, Richard
Moss, and second, Thomas Cockey. PRIVATE CA-
REER. EDUCATION: literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIA-
TION: a Quaker as a young man; converted to An-
glicanism by the late 1680s. SOCIAL STATUS AND

ACTIVITIES: established one of the most prominent
families on the Western Shore; his business often
carried him to England; he was a critical figure in
the selection of the first royal Council in 1691.
OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: a merchant active in the
transatlantic trade; planter. PUBLIC CAREER. LEG-

2nd session); Upper House, 1699-1700 (appointed
