1676, probably in Scotland. IMMIGRATED: in
1709/10 as a free adult with his wife and children
from Virginia. RESIDED: in Kent County; moved
to Philadelphia in late 1715. ADDITIONAL COM-
MENTS: he was in Virginia by 1 700, where he prac-
ticed law; he bought a large plantation in Mary-
land in 1707, but did not migrate there until two
years later. MARRIED ca. 1707 Ann (?-1736),
widow of Joseph Preeson; daughter of Thomas
Browne (?-1705), a Quaker of Northampton
County, Virginia, and his wife Susannah Den-
wood. Her sisters were Elizabeth, who married
Thomas Preeson, and Mary, who married first,
Southy Littleton, and second, Hancock Custis.
CHILDREN. SONS: Andrew (1708-1747); James
(1710-1783), who became governor of Pennsylva-
nia. DAUGHTER: Margaret (1709-1760), who mar-
ried William Allen, a mayor of Philadelphia. PRI-
