BIOGRAPHIES HAL

Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1761, and his
wife Elizabeth Buchanan (1733-1784); niece of
both William Buchanan (1732-1804) and Mary
Buchanan (1729-1782), who married John Smith
(1718-1794). Her brother was William Buchanan.
Her sisters were Mary (?-by 1812), who married
Otho Holland Williams (1749-1794); Margaret,
who married Robert Smith. CHILDREN. SON: Bene-
dict William (1790-?). DAUGHTER: Hannah
Elizabeth (1785-by 1814). PRIVATE CAREER. EDU-
CATION: M.B., College of Medicine, Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania, 1769. RELIGIOUS AFFILLIATION:
Presbyterian, by 1786. SOCIAL STATUS AND AC-
TIVITIES: Gent.; third generation legislator; mem-
ber of the Maryland Society of Cincinnati. OCCU-
PATIONAL PROFILE: physician; planter. PUBLIC
CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Convention, Har-
ford County, 3rd, 1774. OTHER STATE OFFICE:
Executive Council, 1788-1789. LOCAL OFFICES:
Committee of Observation, Harford County, in
office 1775; justice, Harford County, appointed
1795. MILITARY SERVICE: captain, First Company,
Harford County Militia, 1775; colonel, Second
Battalion, Flying Camp, 1776; colonel, Fourth
Battalion of Regulars, 1777; supernumerary colo-
nel, Maryland Line, 1781; brigadier general, First
Brigade (Harford and Cecil counties), Maryland
Militia, 1794-1795 (resigned); lieutenant colonel,
Ninth U.S. Infantry, 1799-1800. STANDS ON PUB-
LIC/PRIVATE ISSUES: signed the Bush Declaration,
Harford County, 1775; his will included details on
the manumission and care of his slaves. WEALTH

DURING LIFETIME. PERSONAL PROPERTY: 14

slaves, 2 servants, 1776; assessed value $882.80
current money, including 23 slaves and 16 oz.

acres in Harford County (inherited from his father

in 1774). SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN LAND BE-

TWEEN FIRST ELECTION AND DEATH: he was enti-
tled to 400 acres in Allegany County for his ser-
vice in the Revolution; acquired the lease on at
least 1 lot in Baltimore Town in 1792; bought an
additional 600 acres in Harford County, 1786-
1800, and sold ca. 900 acres in Harford County,
1800-1811. WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: between
June 18 and November 12, 1814, in Baltimore
County. PERSONAL PROPERTY: his will mentioned
15 slaves. LAND: at least 1,124 acres in Harford
County and probably a lease on 1 lot in Baltimore
City.

HALL, RICHARD (?-1688). IMMIGRATED, ca.
1658 as a free adult with his wife, perhaps from
Virginia. RESIDED: in Calvert County. MARRIED
Elizabeth. CHILDREN. SONS: Elisha Hall (1663-ca.

1716/17), who married in 1688 Sarah, widow of
Jonas Wingfield and daughter of Richard Hooper;
Joseph (1665-1705), who married Ann; Benjamin
Hall (1667-1721), who married Mary (1678-
1742), widow of James Bowling (?-1693) and
daughter of Thomas Brooke (1632-1676); and
Aaron (1669-1704). DAUGHTERS: Rachel (1671-
1730), who married Walter Smith (?-1711);
Elizabeth (1673-1743), who married first, Richard
Evans, and second, Dr. James Kingsbury; Lucia
(1675-?), who married John Smith (?-1738); and
Sarah (1677-?), who married Robert Bradley (?-
1724). PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: literate. RE-
LIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Quaker. SOCIAL STATUS
AND ACTIVITIES: claimed rights in 1663 for trans-
porting thirteen people (himself, his wife, and
eleven others); he served five terms in the Assem-
bly, one of the longest legislative records in seven-
teenth-century Maryland; his two sons and three
sons-in-law also served in the Assembly. OCCUPA-
TIONAL PROFILE: carpenter; planter. PUBLIC CA-
REER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Lower House, Cal-
vert County, 1666, 1669, 1674-1674/75 (elected to
the 3rd session; Laws 4), 1676-1682 (Accounts 1,
3), 1682-1684 (Accounts 2; Laws 2). WEALTH
DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: ca.

2,500 acres in 1666; over 3,700 acres by 1676.
WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: will probated on Au-
gust 28, 1688. LAND: ca. 5,100 acres.

HALL, WALTER (?-1678). IMMIGRATED: in
1652 as a free adult. RESIDED, in Newtown, St.
Mary's County. MARRIED first, by 1658 (name
unknown), widow of Henry Fox. MARRIED sec-
ond, by 1663 Margaret, widow of John Lloyd. She
subsequently married James Pattison. CHILDREN.
Probably died without progeny. PRIVATE CAREER.
EDUCATION: literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION:
Catholic. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: Mr. on
arrival, but not al way referred to as such thereaf-
ter; not Gent, until the mid-1670s. OCCUPATIONAL
PROFILE: planter. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE
SERVICE: Lower House, St. Mary's County, 1676-
1678 (died before the 3rd session). LOCAL OF-
FICES: clerk, St. Mary's County, 1661-1673/74;
coroner, St. Mary's County, 1676; justice, St.
Mary's County, 1677-1678. WEALTH DURING
LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: Over 1,250

acres. WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED, in November
1678. PERSONAL PROPERTY: TEV, 74,461 pounds
of tobacco (including 2 slaves and 2 servants).
