SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST
ELECTION AND DEATH, most of Griffith's land
transactions were speculative in nature. He pa-
tented or purchased large tracts of land and then
subdivided them and sold the smaller parcels.
However, in at least one case in which a tract of
ca. 1,900 acres in Frederick County was sold in at
least 20 parcels betwen ca. 1784 and 1794 he made
very little profit. By 1789 he had sold or agreed to
sell most of his speculative land. WEALTH AT
