GOLDSBOROUGH, ROBERT (1733-1788)
BORN on December 3, 1733, in Cambridge, Dor-
chester County; elder son. NATIVE: third genera-
tion. RESIDED: in Dorchester County, 1733-1752;
England, 1752-1759; Dorchester County, 1759;
"The Point," Dorchester County, 1767. FAMILY
BACKGROUND. FATHER: Charles Goldsborough
(1707-1767), son of Robert Goldsborough (1660-
1746). MOTHER: Elizabeth (?-by 1739), daughter
of Joseph Ennalls (?-1709) and wife Mary Brooke.
STEPMOTHER: Elizabeth (1723-?), daughter of
Samuel Dickinson (ca. 1689-1760) and wife Judith
Troth. UNCLES: William Goldsborough (1709-
1760); John Goldsborough (1711-1778); William
Ennalls (?-1731); and Bartholomew Ennalls (ca.
1700-1783). AUNT Mary Ennalls, who married
Henry Hooper (ca. 1687-1767). HALF BROTHER:
Charles Goldsborough (1740-1769). SISTER:
Elizabeth Greenberry (ca. 1731-1820), who mar-
ried William Ennalls (?-1785). FIRST COUSINS:
Henry Hooper, Jr. (ca. 1727-1790); Robert Golds-
borough IV (1740-1798); Howes Goldsborough
(1747-1797); William Goldsborough (1750/ SI-
1801); Joseph Ennalls (ca. 1745-1779); William
Ennalls (?-1785); John Ennalls (by 1746-ca.
1778); Mary Ennalls, who married Ennalls Hooper
(?-ca. 1763); Ann Ennalls (ca. 1729-by 1790),
who married Henry Hooper, Jr. (ca. 1727-1790);
Elizabeth Goldsborough (ca. 1735-ca. 1786), who
married second, Benson Stainton (?-ca. 1781);
Mary Goldsborough (1755-1796), who married
first, Benedict Brice (1749-1786); and Elinor En-
nalls (ca. 1738-1793), who married Joseph Da/fin
(?-1796). MARRIED on March 27, 1755, in En-
gland, Sarah, daughter of Richard Yerbury (?-
1754), of London, England. Her brother was
Richard, who married, but died without progeny.
Her sister was Rachel, who married Thomas
Watson. CHILDREN. SONS: Charles (ca. 1756-ca.
1759), born and died in England; Charles (1761-
1801), who married Williamina Elizabeth, daugh-
ter of Rev. William Smith, of Philadelphia, Penn-
sylvania; John (by 1766-?), probably died young;
Robert (ca. 1766-1790), drowned, never married;
William, who married Sarah (1770-?), daughter of
Nicholas Worthington (1734-1793); Richard, who
married Achash (1768-?), daughter of Nicholas
Worthington (1734-1793); and Howes, died with-
out progeny. DAUGHTERS: Rebecca (ca. 1757-?),
who married Howes Goldsborough (1747-1797);

Sarah (ca. 1758-by 1832), who married Henry En-
nalls (?-ca. 1803); Elizabeth, who married James
Sykes; Rachel (?-1811), who married in 1791
Horatio Ridout, son of John Ridout( 1732-1797).
PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: entered the Middle
Temple, London, England, in December 1752;
graduated from the College of Philadelphia, 1760.

RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Anglican. SOCIAL STA-
TUS AND ACTIVITIES: Esq., 1755. OCCUPATIONAL

PROFILE: lawyer, called to the bar in February
1757, London, England; returned to Maryland to
practice law in 1759, admitted to the following
courts: Queen Anne's County in March 1 760; Pro-
vincial Court in April 1760; Dorchester County by
November 1772. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE
SERVICE: Lower House, Dorchester County, 1765-
1766 (Accounts 2, 3; Public Offices 2); Conven-
tions, Dorchester County, 1st, 1774, 4th, 1775,
5th, 1775, 6th-8th, 1775-1776 (did not attend the
6th Convention), 9th, 1776; Senate, Eastern Shore,
Term of 1776-1781: 1777, 1777-1778, 1778-1779,
1779-1780, 1780-1781 (did not serve), Term of
1781-1786: 1781-1782, 1782-1783 (resigned on
May 29, 1783), 1783 (elected on November 24,
1783, to fill vacancy after giving his assurance that
he would attend "whenever his health would per-
mit" ; did not serve), 1784 (declined to serve on
November 25, 1784). OTHER PROVINCIAL /STATE
OFFICES: attorney general, 1766-1768 (resigned);
1st Council of Safety, Eastern Shore, 1775
(elected, but did not serve); Consititution Ratifica-
tion Convention, Dorchester County, 1788. LOCAL

OUT OF STATE SERVICE: delegate, Continental
Congress, 1774-1776 (elected in June 1774, De-
cember 1774, April 1775, August 1775, and May
1776). WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. PERSONAL
PROPERTY: 15 slaves, 1775; assessed value
£6,103.13.4, including 123 slaves and 376 oz.
plate, 1783. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: 185 acres
in Dorchester County (all by patent), plus a large
estate in Wiltshire and London, England (acquired
through marriage). SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN

LAND BETWEEN FIRST ELECTION AND DEATH:
inherited at least 4,608 acres in Dorchester County
from his father, 1767; owned a total of 8,631 acres
in Dorchester County, 1783; in an exchange of
land with his son Charles, Robert gave him 1,050
acres in Dorchester County, 1783; resurveyed sev-
eral tracts and added 380 acres of vacant land in
Dorchester County to his total acreage, between
