Gittings bought a few tracts in Baltimore County
and divested himself of ca. 1,754 acres, with all
but 400 acres of it being given to his sons. From
the mid- 1780s until his death Gittings was in-
volved in land transactions in Baltimore Town,
particularly in the Fell's Point and Franklin Street

were William (1711-?), Walter (ca. 1712-?), and
Samuel, all of whom died young; and Henry
(1718-?). Her half brother was John Dickinson
(1732-1808), of Pennsylvania, statesman, author
of Letters from a Farmer in Pennsylvania to the
Inhabitants of the British Colonies (1768), presi-
dent of the Supreme Executive Council of Dela-
ware in 1781, and later elected to the same office
in Pennsylvania, who married Mary, daughter of
