at least 3,481 acres in Somerset County, plus one-
eighth of 823 acres in Somerset County, which
belonged to the partnership of Col. Levin Gale &
Company, plus 2,270 acres in Accomack County,
Virginia.

GALE, LEVIN (ca. 1730-1791). BORN: ca. 1730,
probably in Somerset County; only son. NATIVE:
third generation. RESIDED: in Somerset County.
FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER: Capt. Matthias

Gale (?-1748), a merchant of Somerset County,
son of George Gale (167 1-1 7 12). MOTHER: Marga-
ret Gordon, of Virginia. UNCLES: Levin Gale (ca.
1704-1744); George Gale (?-ca. 1772); and John
Gale (?-ca. 1744). MARRIED on February 20, 1755,
his first cousin Leah Littleton, daughter of Levin
Gale (ca. 1704-1744). CHILDREN. SONS: Robert,
who married Jane; Littleton (?-1815), who mar-
ried Margaret (1774-1848), daughter of Henry
Hollyday (ca. 1725-1789); George Gale (1756-
1815); and Levin (?-by 1806). DAUGHTER: Leah
Littleton, who married Samuel Wilson. PRIVATE

CAREER. EDUCATION: literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIA-
TION: Anglican. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: attor-

between at least 1774 and 1787; officeholder. PUB-
LIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE. Lower House,
Somerset County, 1756-1757 (elected to the 5th
session to fill vacancy), 1757-1758 (Bills of Credit
1), 1758-1761 (Bills of Credit 1), 1768-1770
(Grievances 3), 1771, 1773-1774 (elected, but did

GALLOWAY, BENJAMIN (1752-1831). BORN:
in 1752 at his family's home on the West River,
Anne Arundel County; third son. NATIVE, fifth
generation. RESIDED: in Rhode River Hundred,
Anne Arundel County, until ca. 17% when he
moved to Washington County, settling in
