erick County, elected 1777 (resigned same year).

County, District of Columbia, in office 1806 and
1821; commissioner, Alexandria County, District
of Columbia, in office 1812 and 1818. ADDI-
TIONAL COMMENTS: unsuccessful candidate for a

FELL, WILLIAM (1759-1786). BORN: on August
29, 1759, in St. John's Parish, Baltimore County;
only child. NATIVE: third generation. RESIDED: on
Fell's Point, Baltimore Town. FAMILY BACK-
GROUND. FATHER: Edward Fell (1736-1763), of
Baltimore County, a merchant; son of William
Fell (?-1746), who immigrated from Lancashire,
England, in 1730. STEPFATHER: James Giles
(1749/50-?). MOTHER: Ann (?-1785), daughter of
John Bond and wife Alice Anna Webster. AUNT:
Catherine Fell, who married Thomas Bond, of
Thomas (?-1800). HALF BROTHER: Jacob Wash-
ington (Worthington) Giles (ca. 1776-1851). HALF
SISTERS: Johanna Giles (ca. 1771-?), who married
Dr. Thomas Johnson, of Baltimore County;
Susanna Giles (ca. 1775-1797), who married
Philip Moore. MARRIED never. PRIVATE CAREER.
EDUCATION: literate; his father's will directed that
he be "educated to understand law." RELIGIOUS
AFFILIATION, gave 6 lots on Fell's Point in
Baltimore Town for the erection of a Presbyterian
church, 1782. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES:
Gent., by 1782; Esq., by 1783; traveled in Europe
from 1783 until at least 1784. OCCUPATIONAL
PROFILE: merchant, who probably had a store on
Fell's Point; landlord; continued the development

of Fell's Point in Baltimore Town begun by his
father. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE:
Lower House, Baltimore Town, 1782-1783
(Grievances 1, 2). WEALTH DURING LIFETIME.
LAND AT FIRST ELECTION possibly l,470 acres in
Baltimore, Harford, and Frederick counties, in-
cluding two-thirds of Fell's Point in Baltimore
Town (all inherited from his father, 1766). SIGNIFI-
CANT CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST ELEC-
TION AND DEATH: secured the title to 1,014 acres
of Fell's Point in Baltimore Town and his father's
other land in Baltimore, Harford, and Frederick
counties in 1783. In division of his father's Fell's
Point land with his mother and his stepfather
James Giles (1749/50-?), Fell acquired 100 lots on
Fell's Point in Baltimore Town with their rents
from 1782. WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: a few days
before October 10, 1786, in Baltimore Town. PER-
SONAL PROPERTY: TEV, £2,093.12.1 current
money (including 7 books); FB, estate overpaid
£105.15.4. LAND: ca. 349 lots on Fell's Point in
Baltimore Town leased out; probably ca. 1,000
acres in Baltimore, Harford, and Frederick
counties. ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: income at
death was ca. £1,800 current money per year in
rents from Fell's Point lots. Fell named his half
brother Jacob and his two half sisters Johanna and
Susanna as his principal heirs. Depositions by sev-
eral of Ann Bond Fell Giles's cousins, the possible
legal heirs of Fell, described him as a man in a
"weak state of mind" for some time before his
death. This testimony was challenged by Fell's
contemporaries, however, and the terms of his will
were honored.

KENDALL, JOHN (1674-1734). BORN: in 1674
in Charles County; probably second son. NATIVE:
second generation. RESIDED: in Charles County,
moved to Carolina with his parents in the 1680s,
but returned to Charles County permanently in

1702. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER: Josias Fen-

dall (?-by 1688). MOTHER: Mary, daughter of
John Hatch (ca. 1614-1681). BROTHERS: Robert
(1672-1711/12); Josias (?-1723); and Henry (?-
1736). SISTERS: Jane; Mary (1673-1751), who mar-
ried first, John Theobald (1666-1713), and second,
Matthew Barnes (1670-1745). MARRIED by 1702
Elizabeth (?-1736), widow of William Marshall (?-
1697); daughter of Randolph Hinson. Her sisters
were Mary; Barbara, who married John Spiring.
CHILDREN. SON: Benjamin (?-1764), who married
first, Eleanor (1710-1759), daughter of Philip Lee
(ca. 1681-1744), and second, Priscilla (ca. 1714-
1763). STEPSON William Marshall (?-1697).
DAUGHTERS. Elizabeth, who married John Beall
