married Upton Sheredine (1740-1800); Deborah
Ridgely (1749-1817), who married John Sterett
(1750/51-1787); Mary Ridgely (?-1804), who
married Benjamin Nicholson (?-1792); and Mary
Dorsey (?-1816), who married John Weems (1727-
1794). MARRIED on February 18, 1748, Henrietta
Maria (1730-1762), daughter of Samuel Chew (ca.
1704-1736/37) and wife Henrietta Maria Lloyd
(?-1765); stepdaughter of Daniel Dulany (1685-
1753); granddaughter of Philemon Lloyd (ca.
1674-1732/33). Her brothers were Samuel Chew
(by 1734-1786); Bennett (?-1793), who married
Anna Maria, daughter of Edward Tilghman
(1713-1786); and Philemon Lloyd (?-1770). Her
stepbrothers were Daniel Dulany, Jr. (1722-1797);
Walter Dulany (?-1773). Her sisters were Marga-
ret (?-1773), who married John Beale Bordley
(1726/27-1804); Ann Mary (?-1774), who mar-
ried William Paca (1740- 17 99). Her stepsister was
Margaret Dulany, who married first, Dr. Alexan-
der Hamilton (1712-1756), and second, William
Murdoch (?-1769). Her niece was Henrietta Maria
Chew (1759-1847), who married Benjamin Gallo-
way (1752-1831). CHILDREN. DAUGHTERS: Hen-
rietta Maria (1754-1766); Elinor (?-by 1766). PRI-

Anne Arundel County in November 1742; Prince
George's County in November 1742; Provincial
Court by April 1747; Court of Chancery by May
1747; Frederick County in March 1748/49.
Planter; owned one-third share of an ironworks
with Alexander Lawson and Caleb Dorsey. PUB-
LIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Lower House,

Frederick County, 1757-1758 (Grievances 1, Cv,
2; Public Offices 1, Cv, 2), 1758-1760 (Elections
Cv 1, 1, Cv 2, 2; Grievances Cv 1, 1, Cv 2, 2; Pub-
lic Offices Cv 1, 1, Cv 2, 2; died during the 3rd

DORSEY, JOHN (ca. 1645-1714/15). BORN: ca.
1645 in Lower Norfolk County, Virginia; second
son. IMMIGRATED: in 1649 as a minor with his
parents and siblings. RESIDED: in Anne Arundel
County; Baltimore County, by 1704. FAMILY
BACKGROUND. FATHER: Edward Dorsey (?-ca.
1659), who immigrated to Virginia by 1642 from
Middlesex, England, and settled in Lower Norfolk
County; he was a Quaker by 1657. BROTHERS: Ed-
ward Dorsey (?-1705); Joshua (?-1688); and proba-
bly Samuel. NEPHEW John Dorsey (ca. 1682-?).
MARRIED Pleasance Ely. CHILDREN. SONS: Edward
Dorsey (ca. 1677-1701); Caleb (1683-1742), who
married in 1704 Eleanor, daughter of Richard
Warfield. DAUGHTER: Deborah, who married first,
Charles Ridgely (by 1680-1705), son of Robert
Ridgely (?-1681), and second, Richard Clagett
(1681-1752). PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: liter-
ate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Protestant. SOCIAL

STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: he was more prosperous
and somewhat less controversial than his brother
Edward Dorsey (?-1705); his sons held no provin-
cial offices. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: planter; mer-
chant. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE:
Lower House, Anne Arundel County, 1692-1693,
1701-1704 (Aggrievances 1); Upper House, 1711
(appointed by the 4th session), 1712-1714. OTHER
PROVINCIAL OFFICE: Council, 1710/11-1714/15.
LOCAL OFFICE: justice, Anne Arundel County,
1694-ca. 1698. MILITARY SERVICE: captain, by

1695-1714/15. STANDS ON PUBLIC/PRIVATE IS-
SUES: like his brother, he probably opposed the
revolution of 1689; gained his first appointive of-
fice from Gov. Francis Nicholson, who was sym-
pathetic to proprietary supporters. WEALTH DUR-
