act was passed to change the name of Theodore
Gunby, of Somerset County, to Theodore Gunby
Dashiell. DAUGHTERS: Elizabeth Leah, who mar-
ried John Upshur Dennis; Henrietta Ann (1791-

1791). PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: class of

1784, Washington College, Chestertown, Kent
County. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: Esq.,
1798; fifth generation legislator; member of the
Freemasons, 1804. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: law-
yer. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE:
Lower House, Worcester County, 1789, Somerset
County, 1792, 1797, 1800, 1802, 1803. MILITARY
SERVICE: served in a company of the Wicomico
Battalion, Somerset County Militia, by 1780.
WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. PERSONAL PROP-

on January 31, 1690/91, in Somerset County; el-
dest son. NATIVE: third generation. RESIDED: in
Somerset County. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER
Thomas Dashiell (1666-ca. 1756), son of James
Dashiell (ca. 1634-1697). MOTHER: Elizabeth
Mitchell (1670-?). BROTHERS: Thomas (1700-by
1765); Henry (1702/3-1756); Charles (1705-
1765); John (1711/12-1736); and Levin (1711/12-
1795). SISTERS: Priscilla (1688/89-?); Betty
(1693/94-1762); Isabell (1695-?); Jane (1698-?);
Anne (1707-?), who married Isaac Handy (?-
1762); and Sarah (1709-?). FIRST COUSIN: William
Winder (1714/15-1792). NEPHEWS: John Handy
(ca. 1724-1756); Isaac Handy (1743-ca. 1774);
and John Dashiell (ca. 1740-1817), a possible leg-
islator. NIECE: Priscilla Handy (?-by 1748/49),
who married Benjamin Handy (?-ca. 1763). MAR-

September 10, 1740, Elizabeth (?-ca. 1749), widow
of James Fairfax, of Northampton County, Vir-

ried Sarah, daughter of Capt. William Piper;

married Henrietta Scarburgh; Thomas Dashiell
(1733-1771); Joseph Dashiell (1736-ca. 1787);
Benjamin (1738/39-ca. 1758), died without prog-
eny; and George Dashiell (1743-?). DAUGHTER:
Eleanor (1730-?), who married John Martin. PRI-
VATE CAREER. EDUCATION: literate. RELIGIOUS
AFFILIATION: Anglican, Stepney Parish, Somerset
County (later became part of Wicomico County).
OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: planter; attorney, admit-
ted to the Somerset County Court in June 1713.

House, Somerset County, 1719-1721/22 (Laws 1;
Elections 5), 1724 (elected to the 3rd session to fill
vacancy), 1725-1727 (Aggrievances 1), 1728-1731,
1732-1734, 1734/35-1737 (Accounts 1, Cv, 2^0,
1745/46-1748 (Accounts Cv 1, 1-3, 4; Elections
Cv 1, 1-3, 4). LOCAL OFFICES: clerk of Indict-
ments, Somerset County, appointed 1726; justice,
Somerset County, 1734-1748 (quorum, 1740-
1748); justice, Court of Oyer and Terminer and
Gaol Delivery, Somerset County, commissioned
1736. MILITARY SERVICE: captain, militia, by
1725; major, militia, by 1733/34; colonel, militia,
by 1736. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT
FIRST ELECTION: surveyed 116 acres in Somerset
County, but no patent had been issued prior to his
first election. SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN LAND

BETWEEN FIRST ELECTION AND DEATH: patented

DASHIELL, GEORGE (1743-?). BORN: on Au-
gust 28, 1743, in Somerset County; youngest of
eight sons. NATIVE: fourth generation. RESIDED: in
Wicomico Hundred, Somerset County, until the
1790s; Worcester County, until the early 1800s.
FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER: Col. George Da-

shiell (1690/91-1748), son of Thomas Dashiell
(1666-ca. 1756). MOTHER: Elizabeth (?-ca. 1749),
