BIOGRAPHIES CHA

RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Anglican. SOCIAL STA-
TUS AND ACTIVITIES: Gent., 1756; Esq., 1759;
Hon., 1776. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: merchant,
1769; amassed a fortune through commercial ven-
tures; owned a privateer during the Revolution.
PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Lower

House, Talbot County, 1771 (Grievances; Ac-
counts), 1773-1774 (Grievances 1, Cv, 2, 3; Ac-
counts 1, Cv, 2, 3); Conventions, Talbot County,
4th, 1775, 5th, 1775, 6th-8th, 1775-1776 (Claims
7th, 8th), 9th, 1776; Lower House, Talbot County,
1780-1781 (Grievances 1; resigned on May 25,
1781). OTHER STATE OFFICES: one of four com-
missioners sent by the Convention of Maryland to
New York and New Jersey to offer bounty for
enlistment of soldiers in the Flying Camp, ap-
pointed 1776; 5th Council of Safety, Eastern
Shore, 1777 (appointed on January 3, 1777, to fill
vacancy, but declined to serve). LOCAL OFFICES.
St. Michael's Parish Vestry, Talbot County,
elected 1757 (refused to serve), 1765; sheriff, Tal-
bot County, 1758-1761; commissioner of tax, Tal-
bot County, 1777-1779; St. Peter's Parish Vestry,
Talbot County, elected 1779 and 1780. MILITARY
SERVICE: brigadier general, upper district of the
Eastern Shore, 1776. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME.
LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: 3,716 acres in Talbot
and Queen Anne's counties, and 3 lots in Oxford,
Talbot County (773 acres and 3 lots in Oxford
received by deed of gift from his father; 1,633
acres, plus part of 136 additional acres through his
marriage; 1,310 acres by purchase and patent),
plus control of 1,927 acres in Talbot County for
his nephew Thomas Chamberlaine. SIGNIFICANT

CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST ELECTION

AND DEATH: inherited at least 393 additional
acres in Talbot County from his father, 1773.
WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: between November and
December 1783 in Talbot County. PERSONAL
PROPERTY: assessed value £3,552.0.0, including 77
slaves and 450 oz. plate, 1783. LAND: 4,010 acres
in Talbot and Caroline counties, plus 5 lots in Tal-
bot County; plus he still controlled 1,927 acres in
Talbot County for his nephew Thomas Chamber-
laine, and he also controlled 1,013 acres in Talbot
County for his nephews Henry and Samuel Nicols.

CHAMBERLAINE, SAMUEL (1698-1773).
BORN: on May 18, 1698, at "Sanghall" on the Dee
River, Cheshire, England; third son. IMMIGRATED:
ca. 1721/22 from Liverpool, England. RESIDED: in
Oxford, Talbot County, 1722/23; "Plain Deal-
ing," Tred Avon River, Talbot County, 1735.
FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER: Thomas Cham-
berlaine (1658-1757), of Liverpool, England; a

merchant and shipowner who traded with Oxford,
Talbot County; son of Richard Chamberlaine, a
merchant. MOTHER: Ann Penketh. STEPMOTHER:
(first name unknown) Heyling. BROTHERS: John
(1690-1721), a ship's master, who married Marga-
ret Clay, of Yorkshire, England; Thomas, who
never married and died at age 20. HALF BROTH-
ERS: RJchard; William; and Joseph, who married
in 1740 Ann Prescott (?-1775). MARRIED first, in
1721 Mary (?-1726), daughter of Robert Ungle
(1670/71-1726). MARRIED second, in 1729 Hen-
rietta Maria (ca. 1711-1748), daughter of James
Lloyd (1679/80-1723); stepdaughter of Rev. Ed-
ward Fottrell; granddaughter of Philemon Lloyd
(1646-1685); niece of Edward Lloyd (1670-
1718/19), Philemon Lloyd (ca. 1674-1732/33),
Anna Maria Lloyd (ca. 1676-1748), who married
Richard Tilghman (1672/73-1738/39), Margaret
Lloyd, who married Matthew Tilghman Ward (ca.
1676-1741); half niece of Susanna Bennett (1666-
1714), who married first, John Darnall (?-1684),
and second, Henry Lowe (?-1717). Her brothers
were Robert Lloyd (ca. 1712-1770); James
(1716/17-1768); and Philemon (1721-died
young). Her sisters were Margaret (1714-ca.
1785), who married William Tilghman (1711-
1782); Deborah (1719-?); and Anne (ca. 1723-
1794), who married Matthew Tilghman (1717/18-
1790). Her first cousins were Edward Lloyd (1711-
1770); Richard Lloyd (1711-1786), William Tilgh-
man (1711-1782); Edward Hitman (1713-1786);
Matthew Tilghman (1717/18-1790); James Tilgh-
man (1716-1793); Henrietta Maria Lloyd (?-
1766), who married second, Daniel Dulany (1685-
1753); Mary Tilghman (1702-1736), who married
James Earle, Jr. (ca. 1694-1739); Henrietta Maria
Tilghman (1707-1771), who married first, George
Robins ( 1697- 1742), and second, William Golds-
borough (1709-1760); and Anna Maria Tilghman
(1709-1763), who married first, William Hemsley
(1703-1736), and second, Robert Lloyd (ca. 1712-
1770). Her nephew was Richard Tilghman (1740-
1809). Her nieces were Margaret Tilghman (1742-
1817), who married Charles Carroll, Barrister
(1723-1783); Deborah Lloyd, who married Pere-
grine Tilghman (ca. 1741-1807); and Henrietta
Maria Lloyd (?-1822), who married William Hay-
ward, Jr. (ca. 1758-1834). CHILDREN. SONS: Col.
Thomas (1731-1764), who married Susanna
(1738-?), daughter of George Robins ( 1697- 1742);
James Lloyd Chamberlaine (1732-1783); Samuel
Chamberlaine ( 1742- 1811); Richard; and Robert
Lloyd, who died at the age of 11. DAUGHTERS
Henrietta Maria (1739-1777), who married in
1760 William Nicols (1730-1774); Anne (1734-
