North Carolina Senate from 1782 to 1784; Martin
(1733-1789); Joseph (stillborn 1736); Benjamin
(1737-1792); Joseph Winston (1739-1761); and
Samuel (1742-1785). DAUGHTERS: Elizabeth

office 1724; justice, Baltimore County, 1735-at
least 1744 (quorum, 1739-1744); coroner,
Baltimore County, in office 1736. MILITARY SER-
VICE: captain, troop of horses, Gunpowder Hun-
dred, Baltimore County, qualified 1735. WEALTH
DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION:

528 acres in Baltimore County. SIGNIFICANT

CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST ELECTION

AND DEATH: between 1745 and 1746 he sold his
528 acres in Baltimore County to his brother-in-
law William Dallam and moved to North Carolina
where he received a warrant for 400 acres in John-
ston County in 1747. By 1751 Caswell had been
granted warrants for an additional 250 acres in
Johnston County. WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: on
April 24, 1755, at his home, "Newington-on-the-
Hill," Johnston County, North Carolina (now
near Kinston, Lenoir County, North Carolina).

CAUSIN (CAUSEEN, CAUSEENE, CAW-
SEENE, COSSIN, CAWSEEN, CAUSINE), GE-
RARD BLACKSTONE (?-?). BORN: probably at
"Causin Manor," Charles County, of age by 1769.

Causeen (1690-1751), son of Ignatius Causine (ca.

creditors, 1791. Declared bankruptcy in 1790, giv-
ing Alexander Hamilton, a Prince George's
County attorney, power to sell all of his land and
39 slaves to pay off his creditors (debts dating
from 1784 totaled £4,444.2.7). WEALTH AT
DEATH. DIED: after 1800; size of estate unknown.

ca. 1642 in Charles County; first son. NATIVE: sec-
ond generation. RESIDED: in Charles County. FAM-

1658), who immigrated by 1639 from France.
MOTHER: Jane (1612-?), widow of John Cock-
shutt. She subsequently married Robert Clarke (ca.
1611-1664). BROTHER: Nicholas (1651-?). HALF
SISTERS: Jane Cockshutt, who married Thomas
Mathews (ca. 1622-1675/76); Mary Cockshutt,
who married Henry Adams (?-1686). MARRIED

present 1637/38, St. Michael's Hundred, St.
