on July 21, 1779, to fill a vacancy in the 1778-

Baltimore Town, in office 1762-1765, 1767-1770;
commissioner, Baltimore Town, 1768-1781; jus-
tice, Baltimore County, 1769-1786 (quorum,
1772-1786); one of several citizens who purchased
land to build a public market house in Baltimore
Town, in office 1771; justice, Court of Oyer and
Terminer and Gaol Delivery, Baltimore County,

BUCHANAN, GEORGE (ca. 1697-1750). BORN:
ca. 1697, probably in Scotland. IMMIGRATED: ca.
1723 from Scotland. RESIDED: in Baltimore
County. MARRIED by 1726 Eleanor (?-1758),
daughter of Nicholas Rogers (?-1720) and wife
Eleanor, who subsequently married (first name
unknown) Harris. Her brothers were William;
Nicholas (?-1758), a merchant. Her sisters were
Sarah; Mary; Elizabeth (1715-1777); and Cather-
ine. CHILDREN. SONS: Lloyd Buchanan (1729-ca.
1762); Andrew Buchanan (ca. 1733-1786); Archi-
bald (1736-1785), a merchant, who married Sarah
Brooke Lee (?-1811), sister of Thomas Sim Lee

(1745-1819); George (1739-?); James (1744-1783);
and William (1748-?). DAUGHTERS: Eleanor
(1732-?), who married Richard Croxall; Elizabeth
(1742-?), who married James Gittings (1735-ca.

1823). PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION literate. RE-
LIGIOUS AFFLILIATION: Protestant. SOCIAL STA-
TUS AND ACTIVITIES: Gent., 1726. OCCUPATIONAL
PROFILE, physician; probably owned a small store
in Baltimore Town at the time of his death. PUB-
LIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE. Lower House,

Baltimore County, 1745 (Accounts), 1745/46-
1748 (Accounts Cv 1, 1-3, 4), 1749 (Accounts Cv,
1; died before the 2nd session). LOCAL OFFICES:
commissioner, Baltimore County, appointed to
purchase the land upon which Baltimore Town
was to be built, 1729; commissioner, Baltimore
Town, 1745-1750; justice, Baltimore County,
1732-at least 1749 (quorum, 1741-at least 1749);
justice, Court of Oyer and Terminer and Gaol De-
livery, Baltimore County, appointed 1746 and

1748. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT
FIRST ELECTION: ca. 2,000 acres in Baltimore
County (200 acres through marriage). SIGNIFI-
CANT CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST ELEC-
TION AND DEATH, purchased 78 acres in

1729 in Baltimore County; eldest son. NATIVE:
second generation. RESIDED: in Baltimore County.

FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER Dr. George Bu-

chanan (ca. 1697-1750). MOTHER: Eleanor Rogers
(?-1758). BROTHERS: Andrew Buchanan (ca. 1733-
1786); Archibald (1736-1785); George (1739-?);
James (1744-1783); and William (1748-?). SIS-
TERS: Eleanor (1732-?); Elizabeth (1742-?), who
married James Gittings ( 1735-ca. 1823). MARRIED
Rebecca (?-1759, died in childbirth), daughter of
Alexander Lawson (?-1760), a merchant, and wife
Dorothy Smith. Her brother was Alexander (?-
1798), who married in 1763 Elizabeth Brown. Her
sisters were Isabella (?-ca. 1822), who married
Robert Alexander (1740-1805); Mary (Polly), who
married Robert Christie, Jr.; Susanna (1743-
1798), who married Andrew Buchanan (ca. 1733-
1786); Dorothy (?-1752); Elizabeth (?-1752); and
