STANDS ON PUBLIC/PRIVATE ISSUES The Council

of Safety issued a permit to Matthew Brown "to
pass from any Sea-Port Town in this Province, to
Europe with his Baggage" on June 23, 1776; possi-
bly a Loyalist.

BROWN, NICHOLAS (ca. 1608-1655). BORN:
ca. 1606, probably in England. IMMIGRATED: by
1638 as a free adult from Virginia. ADDITIONAL
COMMENTS: in Virginia by 1634. RESIDED: in Kent

County. FAMILY BACKGROUND. BROTHER: Robert
Brown, a "waterman," of London, England. PRI-
VATE CAREER. EDUCATION: illiterate. RELIGIOUS
AFFILIATION: Protestant. OCCUPATIONAL PRO-
FILE: planter. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SER-
VICE: Assembly, Kent County, 1638/39. LOCAL
OFFICE: justice, Kent County, 1648-1654/55.

WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST

ELECTION: under 500 acres. WEALTH AT DEATH.
DIED buried on July 21, 1655. PERSONAL PROP-
ERTY: TEV, 16,587 pounds of tobacco, plus live-
stock and other items perhaps worth as much as
£50. LAND: 200 acres, plus another plantation of
unspecified acreage.

BROWN (BROWNE), RICHARD (?-?). IMMI-
GRATED in 1648 as a free adult with his wife. RE-
SIDED: in St. Mary's County; moved to Virginia,

1654. PRIVATE CAREER. SOCIAL STATUS AND AC-
TIVITIES: Mr. on arrival; no other evidence of pub-
lic service except jury duty, 1648/49. PUBLIC CA-
REER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE Assembly, St.
Mary's County, 1649 (Accounts). WEALTH DUR-
ING LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: rights
to 200 acres.

BROWNE, DAVID (?-1697). BORN: probably in
Scotland. IMMIGRATED in 1670 as a free adult
from Scotland. RESIDED: in Somerset County.
MARRIED by 1672 Winifred, widow of Capt. Wil-
liam Thorne. CHILDREN. Died without progeny.
PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: literate; possibly
attended Glasgow University. RELIGIOUS AFFILIA-
TION Presbyterian. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVI-
TIES: Gent., by 1686. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE:
merchant; planter. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE
SERVICE: Associators' Convention, Somerset
County, 1689-1692; Grand Committee of Twenty,
1690-1692; Upper House, 1692-1693 (Laws 2),
1694-1697 (did not attend the 8th session). OTHER
PROVINCIAL OFFICES Council, 1691-1697; justice,
Provincial Court, 1693-1694. LOCAL OFFICES: jus-
tice, Somerset County, 1672/73-1692 (quorum,
1679/80-1692); coroner, Somerset County, 1688-
1692. MILITARY SERVICE: captain, 1679/80-1690;

colonel, 1690-1697. STANDS ON PUBLIC/PRIVATE
ISSUES, active supporter of the revolution of 1689,
which brought him his first provincial offices.

WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST

ELECTION: 1,780 acres. WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED:
will probated on September 17, 1697. PERSONAL
PROPERTY: TEV, £1,838.1.6 sterling (including 4
slaves and 4 servants). LAND: 980 acres.

BROWNE, JAMES (1640-1675). BORN, in Sa-
lem, Massachusetts. IMMIGRATED: perhaps by
1663/64, certainly by 1667, as a free adult, proba-
bly with his wife and children from New England.
RESIDED: in Baltimore County; "Parley," Cecil
County, ca. 1675. ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: came
to Maryland in connection with his father's busi-
ness. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER: John
Browne (?-1685), a merchant of Salem, Massa-
chusetts, who had trade associations with Mary-
land for many years, and who sold 1,676 acres on
the Sassafras River in 1663/64. MARRIED in 1664
Hannah, daughter of Henry Bartholomew. CHIL-
DREN. SONS: Bartholomew (1669-?); James (1675-
?). DAUGHTERS: Elizabeth (1671-?); Hannah
(1673-?). PRIVATE CAREER. RELIGIOUS AFFILIA-
TION: Protestant. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: part-
ner with father; merchant; storekeeper. PUBLIC

CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Lower House,

Baltimore County, 1671-1675 (no evidence he ever
sat; left for a voyage to New England before the
1st session). WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND
AT FIRST ELECTION: over 1,900 acres. WEALTH AT
DEATH. DIED: committed suicide on November 12,
1675. PERSONAL PROPERTY: 143,744 pounds of
tobacco, plus a cargo of goods from England and
New England probably worth at least £191.
LAND: over 1,900 acres.

BRUCE, ANDREW (?-1815). BORN: probably in
Maryland, of age in 1765. NATIVE: at least second
generation. RESIDED: in Frederick County; Wash-
ington County; "Mt. Pleasant," Allegany County.
FAMILY BACKGROUND. BROTHER: possibly Nor-
mand Bruce (?-1811). MARRIED Barbara (?-by
1814), daughter of William Murdock (?-1815);
granddaughter of Rev. George Murdock, rector of
Prince George's Parish, Prince George's County in
1726. Her brothers were William (?-ca. 1825), a
merchant of London, England; Benjamin, of Fred-
erick County; and George Murdock (ca. 1742-
1805). Her first cousin was William Murdock
Beall (ca. 1742-1823). CHILDREN. SONS: at least
eight, including Normand Murdock; William; An-
drew; George; and Charles. DAUGHTERS. Susan-
nah; Margaret, who married (first name unknown)
