misfortunes, and only his son Richard Brooke

1740; sheriff, Prince George's County, 1731-1734.

BROOKES, FRANCIS (ca. 1608-by 1658/59).
BORN: ca. 1608, probably in England. IMMI-
GRATED: by 1635, probably as an indentured ser-
vant. RESIDED: in Kent County; St. Mary's
County, by 1650. MARRIED first, (name unknown).
MARRIED second, Ann (?-1653), daughter of
Elizabeth Boulton, of Middlesex, England, who
immigrated in 1649 or 1650 as governess for the
children of William Mitchell (?-1658). MARRIED
third, by 1656 Mary. ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:
accused in 1656 of beating his wife Mary and
causing her to have a stillborn child. CHILDREN.
SON: Francis (ca. 1635-1667/68). PRIVATE CA-
REER. EDUCATION: illiterate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIA-
TION: probably a Protestant. SOCIAL STATUS AND
ACTIVITIES: probably an indentured servant to
William Claiborne (1600-ca. 1677); Mr. and Gent,

indentured servant or low-wage laborer for Clo-
berry & Company; miller in the late 1630s;
planter. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE:
Assembly, present 1647/48; Lower House, St.
Mary's Hundred, St. Mary's County, 1650. LOCAL
OFFICE: justice, Kent County, 1647-1647/48.

STANDS ON PUBLIC/PRIVATE ISSUES: granted 100

acres in Kent County in 1651 for supporting Lord
Baltimore during Ingle's Rebellion. WEALTH DUR-
ING LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: proba-
bly 200 acres. WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: by Janu-
ary 20, 1658/59. LAND: probably 450 acres.

BROOME (BROME), JOHN (1676-ca.
1738/39). BORN: in 1676 in Calvert County; oldest
son. NATIVE: second generation. RESIDED: in Cal-
vert County. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER:
John (?-by 1688/89), an innholder and merchant
as well as a planter who owned 2,750 acres.
MOTHER: Winifred Margaret, who subsequently
