1793, 1794, 1796, 1797, 1798, 1799. LOCAL OF-
FICES: justice, Anne Arundel County, commis-
sioned 1773 and 1777; purchasing agent, Anne
Arundel County, appointed 1779; All Hallow's
Parish Vestry, Anne Arundel County, in office
1813-ca. 1815. MILITARY SERVICE: captain, South
River Militia Company, Anne Arundel County,
by 1776; major, by 1780. WEALTH DURING LIFE-
TIME. PERSONAL PROPERTY: 40 slaves, 1776; as-
sessed value £2,356.19.4, including 41 slaves and
119 oz. plate, 1783; 45 slaves, 1790; 48 slaves,
1798. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: ca. 536 acres in
Anne Arundel County (ca. 386 acres inherited
from his father and 150 acres of confiscated Brit-
ish property purchased in 1780). SIGNIFICANT

AND DEATH: The same tract which he had inher-
ited from his father was appraised as containing
473 acres in 1798. WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED, on
September 12, 1824, at "Rowdown" in Anne

Parish, Calvert County; eldest son. NATIVE: third
generation. RESIDED: in Calvert County; probably
lived on his father's plantation, "Island Neck."

(1676-ca. 1738/39). MOTHER: Anne (?-1761),
daughter of Henry Hooper (ca. 1643-1720). UNCLE:
Henry Hooper (ca. 1687-1767). AUNT: Mary
Hooper Hicks (?-ca. 1757), who married John
Rider ( 1686- 17 39/40). HALF AUNT: Mary Hooper
(1674-1745), who married Henry Ennalls (1675-
1734). BROTHERS: Henry; Thomas. SISTERS: Ann;
Mary (1707-?); Margaret; Elizabeth; and Sarah.
FIRST COUSINS: Henry Hooper, Jr. (ca. 1727-1790);
Henry Travers (?-1765); and Dorothy Rider
(1725-by 1781), who married John Henry (ca.
1714-1781). OTHER KINSHIP: his second cousins
were John Henry, Jr. (ca. 1750-1798); Francis Jen-
kins Henry (?-1796); Charlotte Henry, who mar-
ried William Winder, Jr. (?-1808); and Dorothy
(Dolly) Henry, who married Isaac Henry (?-ca.
1802). MARRIED by 1750, probably Ann, daughter
of Thomas Gantt (?-1765); stepgranddaughter of
both Thomas Hollyday (ca. 1661-1702/3) and
John Wight (?-1705); niece of both Thomas Brooke
(1683-1744) and Sarah Brooke, who married first,
William Dent(ca. 1660-1704), and second, Philip
Lee (ca. 1681-1744); half niece of Jane Brooke,
who married Alexander Contee (ca. 1691-1740).
Her brothers were Thomas Gantt (ca. 1710-1785);
Edward Gantt V-by 1783); Fielder Gantt (?-1807);
and George (?-1779). Her sisters were Priscilla;
Elizabeth. Her first cousins were Richard Brooke
(1716-1783); Eleanor Brooke, who married Sam-
uel Beall (ca. 1713-ca. 1778); Richard Lee (ca.
1707-1787); Arthur Lee (?-1760); and Francis Lee
(?-1749). Her nephews were Erasmus Gantt (?-?);
Thomas Gantt (?-ca. 1802). Her nieces were Ra-
chel Gantt, who married Richard Brooke (1716-
1783); Sarah Gantt, who married Osborn Sprigg
(ca. 1741-1815); and Ann Gantt, who married
Thomas Harwood 111 (by 1757-by 1805). CHIL-
DREN. SONS: Col. John (1727-1797), a lawyer and
captain in the Calvert County Militia from 1754 to
1758, who received land in Western Maryland and
Virginia for his services in the French and Indian
War. John married Mary, sister of John Mackall
(1738-1813) and granddaughter of James Mackall
(1671-1717). Henry (1730-1772), who married
Ann, daughter of William Dawkms; Thomas; and
