Abbreviations and Notes

1, 2, etc. Arabic numbers in session lists after a legislator's name and in the biographical category
LEGISLATIVE SERVICE after the Assembly date refer to sessions of the given General
Assembly.

A Appointed before or during the designated session or convention of the Assembly

by The word "by" preceding a birth or death date means that the birth or death of the legislator
happened within ten years prior to the given date. Elsewhere in the profile, "by" preceding a
date connotes the earliest documented reference to a marriage, elevation to a military post, or
any other event.

C Council

ca. Circa. With birth and death dates, the year given after circa generally represents the middle
year of a span of three.

Chm. Chairman of a committee

Cv Convention. A meeting of an assembly that passed no legislation and that ended prematurely
because of some extraordinary event or an impasse in the proceedings. The Assembly itself
first used the term to describe the meetings held between 19 March 1735/36 and 10 April
1736. These meetings are distinct from, and should not be confused with, the de facto
governing bodies of the colony, also called conventions, that existed during the Glorious
Revolution and again between 1774 and 1776.

D Died before or during the indicated session or convention of an assembly

FB Final Balance. The figure given is the known value of personal property remaining after
payment of debts. Totals are rounded to the nearest penny. "Estate overpaid" immediately
following "FB" denotes insufficient personalty to meet outstanding charges against the estate.
The phrase "as calculated" indicates that the research staff corrected clerical errors.

R Resigned before or during the designated session or convention of an assembly

S Sheriff. The designation connotes a legislator's disqualification from sitting before or during
the numbered session or convention of the Assembly because he chose to accept the office of
sheriff.
