and vending of wares and merchandise of every
description upon the streets or highways of
the town, and to issue licenses or permits to
all itinerant peddlers who may go from house
to house to vend or sell any wares or merchan-

dises; to issue licenses to any and all persons
entering into or beginning transient business
in said town for the sale of any goods, wares
or merchandise; to regulate and provide for
the issuing of licenses to all traveling persons
who dispense medicines or medical advice ;
they shall also have power to demand a license
from all players or showmen exhibiting within
said town, and to provide for licensing theaters
and to regulate or restrain theatrical or other
public amusements within said town; to regu-
late, license and tax restaurants, breweries and
all saloons and other places where malt, spirit-
uous, vinous and fermented liquors are sold ;
to regulate, license and tax all hackney car-
riages, omnibuses or other vehicles used in
said town for the carriage of passengers; all
vehicles used for the carriage or transporta-
tion of freight or merchandise, and all carts or
other vehicles which ply for hire; to levy a
tax and impose a license upon dogs, and to im-
pose a license upon all gas companies, water
companies and telephone companies, brokers,
real estate and insurance agencies located in
or doing business in said town; and to regu-
late and license auctioneers who cry any public
sale or sales within the corporate limits of the
town; provided, that no greater sum than one
hundred dollars be charged for any one license;
and to regulate and control all offensive trades,
manufactures and traffic in offensive fertilizers
or other commodities within the town limits ;
they shall also have power to provide for the
codification of all ordinances which may have

been or may hereafter be passed; and for the
purpose of carrying out the foregoing powers,
and for the preservation of the cleanliness,
health, peace and good order of the community,
and for the protection of the lives and property
of the citizens; and to suppress, abate or discon-
